Depends entirely on what you swapped to, doesn't it?
If you've gone from a BMV-712 to the SmartShunt + GX device combo, that's a genuine upgrade — proper system integration rather than just a standalone meter. On a narrowboat especially, where you're juggling alternator input, solar, and shore power at the marina, having everything talking through VE.Direct is worth it. Blind spots kill batteries.
That said, if you've just replaced a functioning BMV with a newer BMV because it looked a bit tatty, that's probably overkill. The 712 still does its job well. My setup here on land uses a SmartShunt feeding into a Cerbo GX and honestly the visibility is on another level — but I appreciate boats have the added complication of engine charging cycles messing with your SOC accuracy.
Few questions worth asking yourself:
- Are you running LiFePO4 or still on AGM/gel? Because if it's lithium, accurate SOC is critical — not a luxury
- Do you get shore power regularly or are you mostly on the cut? That changes how much the monitoring matters day-to-day
- Can the new unit handle your shunt rating? Narrowboat alternators aren't shy on amps
The narrowboat community tends to under-invest in battery monitoring relative to solar, which is backwards IMO. You can have 400Ah of Fogstar lithium but if your monitoring's dodgy you're flying blind.
What did you actually replace it with? That'll shape whether this was a sensible upgrade or just scratching the upgrade itch.
