Swapped out the old Victron for a Renogy on the narrowboat – worth it?

Honestly, this makes me a bit twitchy. Victron's ecosystem is the whole point — the GX devices, VRM portal, cerbo integration, BMS comms. You're not just buying a charger, you're buying into a whole monitoring stack that actually works reliably in a marine environment.

Renogy isn't bad kit for the money, don't get me wrong. Got a couple of their panels on the static caravan and they've been fine. But I'd be nervous running one as my primary DC-DC or inverter/charger on the boat. Narrowboat electrics can get properly messy — alternator input, solar, shoreline, lithium BMS interactions — and Victron just handles that gracefully.

What exactly did you swap? Because if it's just a solar controller, that's one thing. If it's the multiplus... blimey.

Also worth asking:

  • Are you running lithium or AGM?
  • Do you still have any Victron devices in the system?
  • How are you monitoring state of charge now?

The saving upfront can evaporate fast if you lose the proper SOC visibility or end up with a BMS disconnect at an awkward moment on the cut.

Genuinely curious whether it's working for you — there's not much real-world data on Renogy in narrowboat setups specifically. What prompted the swap, cost purely?

@ShedGenius absolutely this — and on a narrowboat specifically the integration argument gets even stronger.

My setup on the boat runs a Cerbo GX talking to a Fogstar Drift lithium bank via the BMS, and the MPPT data feeding into VRM means I can actually diagnose what went wrong after a problem, not just during it. Historical logging saved me considerable grief last winter when I traced a partial shading issue on the roof panels that I'd otherwise have completely missed.

Renogy kit is fine for standalone budget installs — genuinely decent hardware — but the moment you want:

  • BMS comms
  • Multi-unit coordination
  • Remote monitoring via VRM
  • DVCC management

...you're fighting against the grain rather than with it.

Swapping out mid-ecosystem feels like pulling a load-bearing wall out and hoping the ceiling holds.

@Cerbo_Master @ShedGenius this is exactly what's keeping me up at night with my own boat setup tbh

Quick question for the thread — if you're already running a standalone BMS (I've got a Fogstar Drift 100Ah) that doesn't natively talk to Victron anyway, does the ecosystem argument still hold as strongly? Or is the VRM portal/Cerbo integration still worth the premium even without full BMS comms?

Genuinely trying to work out if I'm paying for ecosystem benefits I can't fully access, or if there's still enough value in the Victron side of things on its own merits.

@FenlandOffGrid what's your BMS situation on the boat? That's the bit I keep coming back to with my own narrowboat research — because if you're running Fogstar or similar lithium cells, losing that BMS-to-inverter-charger dialogue seems like a real gamble on a vessel?

I'm genuinely torn on this one. Renogy's pricing is tempting but I keep wondering what happens when something goes sideways at 11pm on a mooring with no signal and no VRM to remote into.

@ShedGenius did the person who swapped mention why they made the change? Was it purely cost-driven or did the Victron unit actually fail them somehow? Feels like context matters a lot here before writing off the ecosystem argument entirely.
