Swapped out the old Victron for a Renogy on the narrowboat — worth it?

Not a narrowboat setup myself, but I've gone through something similar with my shepherd's hut build — swapped between inverter/charger brands chasing that sweet spot of price vs. reliability, and it's rarely a clean-cut decision.

The Victron ecosystem is genuinely hard to walk away from once you're in it. That Cerbo GX integration, the VictronConnect app, the sheer depth of configurability — it spoils you rotten. Renogy kit has come a long way and the price difference is real money, but I'd be curious whether you're noticing any gaps in the monitoring side of things. That's usually where the cheaper alternatives fall short in day-to-day life.

For my EV charging setup I kept Victron specifically because I needed the load-shedding logic to play nicely with the rest of the system — I'm not sure I'd trust a cheaper unit to handle that without a lot of faffing about.

A few things I'd want to know from you:

  • Which Renogy unit did you go for? The Lycan range or one of the inverter-chargers?
  • How are you finding the app? Renogy's DC Home app has had mixed reviews
  • Any difference on efficiency — particularly at partial loads, which is where narrowboats tend to spend most of their time?

The narrowboat community seems to be split pretty evenly on this from what I've read. Would love to hear from others who've made the switch in a marine environment specifically — corrosion resistance and build quality feel like they'd matter a lot more on water than in my little hut on a Somerset field.

@VivaroBuild mate I'd be very cautious swapping Victron out on a narrowboat specifically. The damp environment is brutal on kit, and Victron's build quality + their IP rating tolerance really does earn its premium in that context.

I've got a Victron Multiplus on my narrowboat and yes, the upfront cost stings, but the ecosystem — VRM portal, MPPT integration, BMS comms — it all just works together seamlessly. Renogy stuff isn't bad by any means, I've used their panels on the tiny house project, but their inverter/charger range feels like it's still catching up on the integration side.

The real question is what you're actually saving net of potential callout costs if something goes wrong mid-winter mooring. Canal-side repair options aren't exactly abundant.

@WattVicky makes a fair point about the damp — but I'd add that the Victron ecosystem integration is often the bigger loss people don't anticipate. Once you're running VRM, DVCC, and a SmartShunt all talking together, ripping the inverter/charger out breaks that whole chain.

On my shepherd's hut build I run a Victron Multiplus-II 24/3000 and the monitoring alone has saved me twice — caught a duff cell in my Fogstar 24V pack before it became a real problem.

Renogy kit isn't bad for the money, but their communication protocols are largely proprietary and don't play nicely with third-party BMS units the way Victron does. For a narrowboat where you're relying on shore power integration and alternator charging simultaneously, that matters enormously.

What's the actual reason for the swap — cost, warranty issue, something specific? That'd change the advice considerably.

@BatteryBarry spot on about the ecosystem — that's the killer feature people underestimate until they've lived without it. On my shed setup I've got the Cerbo GX talking to everything and the visibility alone is worth the premium.

Had a mate with a narrowboat who switched to a budget brand and spent a summer guessing his state of charge. Not ideal when you're mid-canal with a flat bank!

That said, Renogy have come on a lot recently. If you're not bothered about full VRM integration and keep things simple, you can make it work. But the moment you want MPPT + inverter + battery comms all singing together, Victron just wins it.

What batteries are you running @VivaroBuild? That changes the calculation a fair bit.

@RetiredEngineer86 @BatteryBarry genuine question — how much of that Victron ecosystem advantage actually matters day-to-day vs. just being nice to have? I'm asking because I'm weighing up a similar decision for my own setup (land-based, not marine) and wondering whether the Cerbo GX / VRM monitoring is a genuine necessity or more of a luxury if you're checking in on things regularly anyway.

Also curious whether anyone's seen the Renogy warranty support hold up in practice when something goes wrong — that's always where budget brands fall apart in my experience. The price difference is tempting but not if you're stranded without backup.
