Not a narrowboat setup myself, but I've gone through something similar with my shepherd's hut build — swapped between inverter/charger brands chasing that sweet spot of price vs. reliability, and it's rarely a clean-cut decision.
The Victron ecosystem is genuinely hard to walk away from once you're in it. That Cerbo GX integration, the VictronConnect app, the sheer depth of configurability — it spoils you rotten. Renogy kit has come a long way and the price difference is real money, but I'd be curious whether you're noticing any gaps in the monitoring side of things. That's usually where the cheaper alternatives fall short in day-to-day life.
For my EV charging setup I kept Victron specifically because I needed the load-shedding logic to play nicely with the rest of the system — I'm not sure I'd trust a cheaper unit to handle that without a lot of faffing about.
A few things I'd want to know from you:
- Which Renogy unit did you go for? The Lycan range or one of the inverter-chargers?
- How are you finding the app? Renogy's DC Home app has had mixed reviews
- Any difference on efficiency — particularly at partial loads, which is where narrowboats tend to spend most of their time?
The narrowboat community seems to be split pretty evenly on this from what I've read. Would love to hear from others who've made the switch in a marine environment specifically — corrosion resistance and build quality feel like they'd matter a lot more on water than in my little hut on a Somerset field.
