Been thinking about this after reading a few threads elsewhere about brand loyalty versus practicality when ageing kit starts to give up.
My situation is slightly different — shepherd's hut rather than a boat — but the principle is the same. I ran a mismatched inverter/charger setup for about two years before finally consolidating onto a Victron Multiplus-II. Before that I had a decent enough pure-sine inverter paired with a separate MPPT and a standalone charger, and whilst it worked, the lack of integration was a constant headache. Programming three separate bits of kit to play nicely, especially around charge priorities and load shedding, was genuinely frustrating.
The moment everything sat under one Victron ecosystem with VRM and VE.Bus, it was like the lights came on (quite literally, and reliably).
The question I'd put to the forum is this: at what point do you decide to replace rather than repair? Particularly where you've got a working charger that's paired to a failed or failing inverter from the same manufacturer. Do you:
- Source a like-for-like replacement from the original brand?
- Replace just the inverter with something from a different manufacturer (risking integration headaches)?
- Bite the bullet and go full combi unit from scratch?
I suspect the answer depends heavily on how embedded you are in an existing ecosystem. Replacing one half of a tightly coupled system always feels risky to me.
Interested whether anyone has successfully mixed brands on the inverter/charger side without regrets — or whether it's always ended in tears.
