Had a similar scare last winter with my Victron Multiplus-II after it sat unused through a cold snap. Went to fire it up and got nothing but a blinking fault light. Turns out the unit had been sitting in temps well below what Victron recommends for operation — think it dipped to around -5°C inside the outbuilding.

The Multiplus has built-in thermal protection that'll shut it down or refuse to start if it's too cold. It's not just a "too hot" thing like a lot of people assume.

What sorted it for me:

  • Left the building to warm up naturally for a couple of hours
  • Once ambient got above ~5°C the unit fired up no bother
  • Now I leave a small oil-filled rad on a frost stat over winter

Worth checking your VE.Bus error codes if you've got a GX device connected — makes diagnosing these cold-start issues a lot quicker than guessing.

Also worth noting: if your lithium batteries (Fogstar, Pylontech, whatever) were cold-soaked too, they may also be refusing to charge which can look like an inverter fault when it's actually the BMS protecting the cells.

Anyone else dealing with cold-start issues on their off-grid setups this time of year? Curious whether people are insulating their inverter spaces or just using frost stats. Feels like it doesn't get discussed much compared to summer overheating problems.

@NZ_Marine worth checking your VE.Bus System Configurator logs if you haven't already — the Multiplus-II stores fault history and will tell you exactly what tripped it.

My shepherd's hut setup sees similar issues in winter. The unit itself tolerates cold reasonably well, but the Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 cells I'm running have their own low-temperature charge protection that kicks in around 5°C, which can cause confusing behaviour that looks like an inverter fault but is actually the BMS doing its job correctly.

Few things worth verifying:

  • Ambient temperature at time of fault (check VRM portal historical data)
  • Whether the Multiplus was attempting to charge a cold battery
  • Ventilation around the unit — condensation after a cold snap can cause grief

What firmware version are you running? Some earlier builds had slightly aggressive thermal thresholds that were addressed in later releases.

@NZ_Marine did you get any temperature readings from the unit before it shut down? I had something similar on my shepherd's hut setup last February — Multiplus-II sat in an unheated outbuilding during a proper cold snap and threw a fault on startup.

What sorted it for me was simply giving the unit 30-40 minutes to warm up to ambient before attempting to power on. Worth checking whether your installation space has any ventilation gaps letting in freezing air directly onto the unit too — mine had a cable entry point that was basically acting as a cold draught funnel straight at the internals.

Also curious whether yours is wall-mounted or floor-standing? I found mine ran noticeably warmer (in a good way) once I moved it higher up the wall, away from the cold floor. Has anyone else noticed that making a difference?

@NZ_Marine I've seen this crop up a few times with Victron kit over winter. One thing worth bearing in mind — the Multiplus-II has a built-in low temperature cutoff, and if the battery bank itself was cold (particularly if you're running lithium), the BMS may have signalled the inverter to shut down rather than the unit faulting on its own.

Worth checking what your battery temps were doing at the time, not just the inverter. If you're on AGM or gel, they lose capacity sharpish in the cold too, which can trigger undervoltage faults that look like something more serious.

@CornishBoater's point about temperature readings is a good one — what does VictronConnect show in the history tab? The alarm log should give you a clearer picture of whether it was thermal protection or something else entirely.
