Running a Multiplus II 5000 in my motorhome with a pair of Fogstar Drift 48V batteries, and the Class T fuse debate nearly broke my brain harder than the wiring itself.

Here's the thing — between the Lynx Distributor's built-in fusing and whatever your BMS is already doing, it's easy to convince yourself you're double-covered and crack on. Tempting. Wrong.

The Class T argument basically boils down to one genuinely terrifying scenario: a dead short before your other protection gets a chance to blink. At 48V with serious amp-hour capacity behind it, that's not a "oops" moment, that's a "explain this to the insurance company" moment — assuming there's still a motorhome to point at.

Victron's own documentation dances around it a bit, which doesn't help anyone. Some installers swear by a 300A Class T on the positive between battery and Lynx Power In as non-negotiable; others say the Pylontechs' internal protection makes it redundant. Both camps sound very confident on YouTube at 11pm.

My honest take: if the fault current your battery bank can deliver would embarrass a welder, fit the Class T. It's £30-ish from Bimble or similar, and the fuse holder isn't much more.

Curious what everyone else has gone with — particularly anyone running Pylontechs or similar rack batteries where the BMS is doing heavy lifting. Are you relying on it, or belts and braces?

@SolarRob the Multiplus II will absolutely eat a standard ANL fuse if things go sideways — seen it happen. Class T is worth every penny for anything above 3kW honestly.

Running a similar setup in my shepherd's hut (Multiplus II 3000, single Fogstar Drift 48V) and went Class T from the start. The Fogstar can dump serious amps when the BMS decides not to play ball, and you really don't want a fuse that's just... decorating the cable at that point.

The Victron recommended sizing guide is your mate here — don't just guess. Undersized and it nuisance-trips, oversized and it's basically ornamental.

What gauge cable are you running? That'll dictate your fuse rating more than the inverter spec will.

@GazAllen is correct that ANL fuses are slower to clear, but the actual reason Class T is specified for high-capacity lithium systems isn't purely about clearing time — it's about interrupt rating.

Your Fogstar Drift cells can deliver fault currents that will simply weld an undersized ANL fuse closed rather than blow it. That's catastrophically worse than no fuse at all.

For a Multiplus II 5000 on 48V with decent lithium behind it, you're realistically looking at potential fault currents exceeding 10,000A. Class T fuses are rated to interrupt 20,000A+. Most ANL fuses top out around 6,000A interrupt capacity — the number that's almost never printed on the packaging.

Check the datasheet, not the current rating. The interrupt rating is the spec that actually matters here.

@SolarNotSure makes a fair point on the interrupting capacity — that's the bit most people gloss over.

Running a Victron setup on my boat with LiFePO4 and I went Class T purely because the battery bank can theoretically deliver fault currents that would just weld an ANL fuse shut rather than clear it. At that point your "protection" is actively making things worse.

The interrupting rating on a decent Class T (Ferraz Shawmut or Bussman) is typically 20kA+ versus maybe 6kA on a standard ANL. With lithium chemistry capable of dumping serious short-circuit current, that gap matters.

For an emergency backup scenario it's arguably more critical — kit that sits idle for months then gets hammered hard is exactly when you want fusing you can actually trust.

Worth the extra tenner, frankly.

@SolarRob spent three weeks arguing with myself about this on the narrowboat before a sparky mate just pointed at the Victron wiring unlimited guide and said "it's in there, mate" — saved me an aneurysm.

The bit nobody mentions: a Class T fuse holder quality matters as much as the fuse itself — cheap holders on 48V lithium systems get hot enough to make you question your life choices.
