Unable to access the relay switch page using VRM

Been down this rabbit hole with my Victron setup in the motorhome — got a SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 and a SmartShunt all talking nicely via VE.Direct, but trying to access the relay configuration through VRM remotely is like trying to find a Greggs in the middle of the Highlands.

Anyone else found that the relay switch page just doesn't show up on VRM unless you've got a GX device (Cerbo, Venus, etc.) sat in the middle? From what I can tell, direct VE.Direct connections don't give VRM the full control layer — you can monitor all day long, but actually toggling or configuring the programmable relay is another story entirely.

For anyone running a similar 48V AGM setup with a pump load, the relay on the MPPT is brilliant for low-voltage disconnect — but you'll need to either:

• Configure it locally via the VictronConnect app over Bluetooth while you're stood next to the unit
• Or drop a Cerbo GX into the mix if you want proper remote control through VRM

The Cerbo isn't exactly cheap but it transforms what VRM can actually do rather than just show.

Curious whether anyone's found a workaround without buying more Victron kit — feels like every solution involves spending another £200 with them! Also wondering if anyone's running Fogstar Drift lithiums with this kind of relay setup and had any grief with the charge profiles on the MPPT playing nicely.

What's your experience been — are you configuring relays locally or have you gone full GX device route?

@Smithy the relay on the SmartSolar MPPT isn't actually accessible through VRM directly — that's a known limitation. You need to use the VictronConnect app via Bluetooth to configure it, not VRM.

VRM is mainly for monitoring and remote firmware updates rather than device configuration. The relay settings live under the MPPT's own menu in VictronConnect → SmartSolar → Relay.

Had exactly this confusion when setting up my garden office system. Spent ages poking around VRM wondering why I couldn't find it.

Worth noting:

• If you've got a Cerbo GX or similar in the loop, some relay functions move there instead
• The SmartShunt relay is configured the same way — VictronConnect only

Is yours a standalone setup or have you got a GX device involved? That changes things slightly.

@ExJoiner19 is on the right track. The relay on the SmartSolar is configured locally through the VictronConnect app over Bluetooth, not via VRM. VRM's just for monitoring really — always catches people out.

On my cabin setup I made the same mistake for about a week before I bothered reading the manual properly. 🤦

Worth noting: if you've got a Cerbo GX or similar in the loop, you can get more relay control options through that via VRM — but the MPPT's own relay stays in VictronConnect's domain regardless.

So:

1. Open VictronConnect
2. Connect via Bluetooth to the MPPT
3. Go to Settings → Relay

That's your only route for that particular relay. Classic Victron — brilliant kit, documentation spread across 47 different PDFs.

@Smithy worth knowing the SmartShunt does have a relay accessible via VRM if you're on a GX device — so if you ever add a Cerbo GX to the setup, that opens things up considerably.

For now though, VictronConnect over Bluetooth is your friend for the MPPT relay; you can set it as a high-temp or high-voltage alarm output which is genuinely useful on a motorhome where you can't always babysit the batteries.

Had mine configured as a low-SOC alarm relay on the narrowboat — saved my bacon more than once when I'd left something drawing overnight. 🥔

@Smithy just to be precise about this — the SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 doesn't have a physical relay at all. It has a virtual load output, which is a different thing entirely. The relay functionality you might be thinking of is on units like the MultiPlus or certain larger MPPTs.

If you're seeing "relay" options greyed out or missing in VRM, that's likely why — there's nothing there to configure remotely.

As @Spud mentions, the SmartShunt relay is a physical relay and works differently. Worth clarifying exactly which device you're trying to configure, because the solution varies significantly depending on that. Check your MPPT datasheet — the 100/30 spec sheet confirms no relay output.
