Been thinking about this lately after helping a mate sort his motorhome electrics — curious if anyone else has gone down the Nordic Elektronica route for charge management?

I've got a fairly straightforward setup on my own motorhome: Victron SmartShunt, a Fogstar 100Ah LiFePO4, and a decent B2B charger keeping things topped up from the alternator. Works a treat most of the time.

But the bit I keep going back and forth on is how fussy LiFePO4 can be when you're mixing charge sources — shore power, solar, and alternator all at once. Getting them to play nicely together without confusing the BMS is where it gets interesting.

Specifically wondering:

  • Has anyone used a Nordic Elektronica smart charger alongside a Victron MPPT and found the communication between them reliable?
  • Any gotchas when retrofitting into a European-built 'van (EuraMobil, Hymer, Bürstner etc.) where the factory wiring doesn't always match UK/German conventions cleanly?

I had a bit of a headache getting charge profiles to agree when I first switched from AGM — kept getting premature absorption cutoffs. Turned out the BMS was interpreting the charger's voltage spikes as a fault. Took a bit of fiddling with the charge parameters to settle it down.

Would be good to hear from anyone who's nailed a clean multi-source setup, especially if you're running a European 'van. Seems like there's more of us doing these retrofits than the forums sometimes suggest.

@FellLover Nordic Elektronica gear is decent enough, but honestly when I was fitting out my Transit I went deep down the rabbit hole comparing it against Victron's Orion-Tr Smart for the DC-DC boost charging side of things — and the Victron won me over purely because of the VictronConnect app integration.

Being able to watch the charge curve whilst parked up in a Tesco car park felt genuinely magical the first time.

The thing nobody tells you though: whatever booster you go with, your alternator protection settings matter far more than the brand name on the box. Spent a sweaty afternoon learning that lesson outside Inverness.

If your mate's motorhome has a smart alternator (anything post-2015ish), make sure the unit has proper voltage-sense capability — that's where cheaper units fall flat completely.

Interesting timing on this thread — I'm currently spec'ing out a garden office build and trying to decide between a dedicated DC-DC charger setup versus something more integrated.

@FellLover what's the actual use case here — are we talking alternator charging from a vehicle, or mains-fed smart charging?

I ask because the answer seems to dramatically change which direction makes sense. For my garden office I'm leaning Victron for the ecosystem benefits (everything talks to each other via VE.Direct), but I've seen Nordic Elektronica kit recommended for van conversions where space is tighter.

A few things I'm still trying to work out:

  • How does the Nordic gear handle lithium charge profiles vs AGM?
  • Is there decent UK supplier support if something goes wrong?
  • Does it integrate with anything like a Cerbo GX for monitoring?

Anyone actually running this long-term rather than just fitting it?

Bit of an unusual thread title for a UK forum — looks like it's drifted in from a German-language community somewhere, so worth flagging that "Nordelectronica" may refer to different product lines depending on the market.

That said, on the narrowboat I run a Victron SmartSolar into a Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 bank, with a Victron Cyrix-Li-ct handling the split-charge from the alternator rather than a dedicated B2B booster. Works reliably but I'm genuinely curious whether a proper DC-DC charger (something like the Victron Orion-Tr Smart) would better protect the alternator under sustained load.

@MuddySkipper for a garden office build I'd lean toward a standalone MPPT/inverter-charger combo rather than anything requiring alternator integration — completely different use case and honestly simpler to size correctly from the outset.

Good point from @AshChild about the thread title — probably got cross-posted or something got lost in translation somewhere along the way!

Anyway, happy to chip in on the actual topic. I've used Nordic Elektronica's NE-series DC-DC charger on my campervan build and it's been solid. The voltage sensing works reliably enough, though I did find it needed a bit of tweaking out of the box to stop it cutting off too early when the van battery was under load.

@MuddySkipper for a garden office you might actually want to look at a proper MPPT controller alongside rather than relying solely on a load booster — depends on whether you're running solar as well. What's your source charging situation looking like? Mains hook-up only or a hybrid setup?

@Ozzy89 yeah the multilingual drift happens a lot on these aggregator threads — Nordic Elektronica (or Nordelectronica as they spell it) is actually a legitimate Scandinavian manufacturer doing B2B battery management kit, though they're not widely distributed in the UK retail space.

For practical purposes though, if @FellLover's mate needs a DC-DC charge booster for a motorhome setup, Victron's Orion-Tr Smart range is genuinely hard to beat — isolated versions handle the alternator vs leisure battery separation properly, and the Bluetooth app integration means you're not flying blind.

@MuddySkipper for your garden office build, the Orion non-isolated 30A is solid if your chassis grounds are shared. Pair it with a Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 and you've got a tidy system without the exotic import headache that Nordelectronica parts would involve sourcing-wise! 🔋
