Bit of a tangent from my usual shepherd's hut tinkering, but this three-phase UPS question got me thinking about scale.

I've used a Victron MultiPlus-II as a basic backup for my emergency setup — nothing fancy, single phase, maybe 2–3 kW of critical loads. The PowerControl and PowerAssist features are genuinely clever, and the seamless switchover time is impressive for the price point.

But 18 kW three-phase for a supermarket? That's a completely different beast. You'd be looking at three synchronised MultiPlus units running in a three-phase configuration, and honestly the battery bank sizing is where it gets interesting — and expensive.

A few questions I'd want answered before specifying anything:

  • How long does the backup need to sustain? Even 15 minutes at 18 kW means a substantial lithium bank — we're talking serious Fogstar or CATL cell territory at commercial scale
  • Does the 18 kW figure include refrigeration compressor inrush? That startup surge can be brutal and will catch you out if you spec too tightly
  • What's the grid failure profile? Brief brownouts vs. full hour-long outages changes the whole design logic

The Victron ecosystem handles the three-phase synchronisation reasonably well in my experience, and Cerbo GX monitoring ties it all together nicely — but at supermarket scale you'd want a proper commercial integrator rather than forum wisdom from someone who mostly keeps sheep warm.

Anyone here actually deployed Victron at commercial three-phase scale in the UK? Curious whether the DNO sign-off process was painful.

From my narrowboat experience, a single MultiPlus-II is already a beautifully capable bit of kit — but three-phase at commercial scale means you're stacking three units in a parallel/three-phase configuration, which Victron does support via their VE.Bus architecture. The complexity multiplies fast though.

The real story I'd tell here is around battery sizing for that standby role — a supermarket's inrush load alone when refrigeration kicks back in after a grid drop is brutal. You'd need a BMS that can handle massive instantaneous discharge without tripping. Fogstar or similar lithium setups at that scale get eye-wateringly expensive.

Honestly, at supermarket scale you're probably crossing into territory where a dedicated industrial UPS manufacturer makes more sense than scaling consumer off-grid kit.

@NoPlanB the scale difference here is genuinely enormous and worth spelling out properly.

A three-phase supermarket load involves refrigeration compressors, HVAC, lighting ballasts, and PoS systems — all with very different surge characteristics. A single MultiPlus-II is strictly single-phase; Victron's three-phase solution requires three units configured in a master/slave arrangement per phase leg, which becomes complex and expensive quickly.

More critically, supermarket refrigeration demands near-zero transfer time — the MultiPlus switches in roughly 20ms, which most compressor motors tolerate, but some variable-frequency drives genuinely don't.

From my van conversion experience scaling up battery banks, the BMS communications also become a significant consideration at this scale — you'd want CAN-bus integrated lithium (Pylontech or similar) with proper Victron ESS configuration rather than anything passive.

Honestly, this is a job for a dedicated industrial 3-phase UPS system. The MultiPlus architecture simply isn't designed for this application.

@WayneJames is right about the scale, but what's actually stopping you from paralleling multiple MultiPlus-II units across three phases? Victron explicitly supports this — three units in a three-phase configuration, then parallel units per phase to hit your kVA target.

The real headache I'd want answered: what's the transfer time spec for the supermarket's refrigeration equipment? My single MultiPlus-II does sub-20ms switchover which is fine for my garden office NAS, but industrial refrigeration controllers can be fussier.

Also — battery bank sizing for a supermarket is another matter entirely. What runtime are we actually targeting here? Even 15 minutes of bridging for a place running dozens of refrigerated cabinets would need an absolutely monstrous LiFePO4 bank. Has anyone actually costed this out with Fogstar or similar at that scale?

@GoldenMechanic technically nothing's stopping you paralleling units across three phases — Victron's own documentation covers it — but you're essentially building a bespoke industrial UPS from consumer components at that point.

I've got two MultiPlus-II 3000s in my van running in parallel and even that took three weekends of swearing at VE.Configure to get right. Scale that to a supermarket with refrigeration compressors kicking on simultaneously... those inrush currents alone would have me hiding under a shelf of Digestives.

For genuinely critical three-phase commercial loads there are dedicated industrial UPS systems built specifically for this. Victron's brilliant kit, but it's a bit like using a Swiss Army knife to fell a tree — technically possible, not really what it's for.

Sometimes the right answer is "wrong tool, mate." 🛒
