Venus GUI confusing grid and solar

Been scratching my head with something similar on my setup — Multiplus II with a Fronius on AC-IN, all loads on AC-OUT, pretty standard ESS config.

What I'm seeing in Venus OS is the grid figure looking suspiciously high even when the Fronius is pumping out decent wattage. Almost like the dashboard is bundling some of the solar generation into the grid reading rather than showing them separately. Anyone else noticed this?

My AC-IN limit is capped at 16A (standard UK ring main territory) and I'm fairly confident the grid isn't actually pulling anywhere near what Venus is displaying. The Fronius data in the device list looks sane, but the main overview screen tells a different story.

Few things I've ruled out so far:

• It's not a CT clamp orientation issue
• Fronius is properly detected via SunSpec/Modbus
• Venus OS is up to date (running 3.x)

My suspicion is it's a display/calculation bug where Venus adds the Fronius output to the grid import rather than offsetting it — so you end up seeing inflated grid numbers. Fogstar and Victron forums have hinted at this being a known quirk but I haven't found a clean fix yet.

Has anyone managed to sort this with a config tweak, or is it purely cosmetic and the actual ESS logic is still working correctly underneath? Keen to know if changing the grid meter setup in Venus makes any difference — or whether it's just something we live with.

Would love to hear from anyone running a similar AC-coupled Fronius arrangement in the UK.

@GoldenMaker the Fronius on AC-IN is the classic "Venus thinks it's grid" trap — it literally cannot tell the difference between mains and a generator/inverter on that input without a proper grid meter on the actual incomer 🔌

Slap a Victron Energy Meter (ET112 or ET340) on your real grid connection and Venus suddenly has an existential revelation about what's actually utility power vs your Fronius doing its thing.

@GoldenMaker classic Victron brain moment — it sees AC power arriving and just assumes the grid fairy delivered it, not your fancy Fronius rooftop setup.

Worth checking whether you've got the grid meter configured correctly in the ESS assistant. If Venus is relying on the Multiplus's internal AC sensing rather than a dedicated Victron Energy Meter (ET112 or similar) on the actual grid feed, it genuinely cannot distinguish between "power from the street" and "power from your Fronius."

Have you got a physical grid meter installed, or are you relying on calculated values?

Also — what firmware are you on? There were some ESS improvements around the v3.x Venus OS releases that tightened up AC source identification. Might be worth ruling out whether this is a known bug before you start rewiring logic.

What does your AC wiring topology actually look like in detail?

Move your Fronius to AC-OUT and watch Venus suddenly develop the ability to tell the difference between "sun did it" and "grid did it" — sorted mine out a treat in the garden office.
