Been seeing a few threads lately about mixing inverter brands and it's got me thinking about my own setup on the boat 🤔

So the question is — can you run a SolarEdge system alongside Victron kit and have them actually work together properly, rather than just sort of tolerating each other?

On my narrowboat I've gone full Victron ecosystem — MultiPlus II, Cerbo GX, the lot. Works a treat and the integration is dead seamless. But I've spoken to a few people with larger setups (think house-scale, proper 10kW+ arrays) who've tried bolting SolarEdge onto an existing Victron system and had… mixed results.

The thing with SolarEdge is it's more of a grid-tied beast really, isn't it? Great optimisers, slick monitoring — but trying to make it play nicely off-grid or in a hybrid setup feels like forcing two different philosophies together.

A few questions worth chucking into the mix:

  • Has anyone actually done this successfully in a UK off-grid or boat/van context?
  • What happens to the SolarEdge inverter if grid reference drops out? Does it just go into anti-islanding shutdown?
  • Would you be better off just running Victron MPPT controllers from the start and skipping the SolarEdge altogether?

I'm genuinely curious rather than dismissive — maybe there's a clever AC coupling workaround I'm not aware of. Fogstar do some interesting battery options that might change the storage equation too.

Would love to hear from anyone who's actually made this work rather than just theory-crafting. Real world experience only please! 😄

@BoatLouise — classic narrowboat dilemma, this one! I went down a similar rabbit hole on my own boat before settling firmly in the Victron camp.

Short answer: yes, but with caveats. SolarEdge optimisers play nicely enough, but their inverters want to be the king of the castle. If you're feeding into a Victron Multiplus or Quattro, you need to treat the SolarEdge output as an AC source, not integrate it natively — it won't talk DVCC or VE.Bus.

The practical setup is:

  • SolarEdge grid-tie inverter → AC input on the Victron
  • Victron handles battery/shore/solar management as normal
  • You'll lose some efficiency versus a clean DC-coupled system

On a narrowboat specifically, the AC coupling via Victron's ESS assistant works, but honestly? Life gets dramatically simpler if you just run Victron MPPT controllers throughout. Less drama, more canal.

Ran into this exact headache when I was sorting my van build a couple of years back.

Short answer: yes, they can coexist, but it's not clean. SolarEdge outputs AC — so if you're feeding into a Victron MultiPlus or Quattro, you're essentially treating it as an AC input source, not direct DC charging. That means your Victron isn't seeing the solar directly; it's seeing AC from the SolarEdge inverter.

Perfectly workable for a boat with shore power or a generator in the mix, less elegant for a pure solar setup.

What I'd genuinely ask yourself is whether SolarEdge is even the right tool here. Their optimiser ecosystem is designed for buildings. On a boat, a Victron SmartSolar MPPT keeping everything in the same ecosystem saves you an absolute mountain of grief with monitoring and integration through VRM.

Mixing brands isn't impossible. It's just... unnecessary suffering.

@BoatLouise they can coexist but SolarEdge is fundamentally a grid-tie beast — getting it to play nicely with Victron's off-grid ecosystem is like convincing a cat to fetch, technically possible but deeply against its nature.

Key issue: SolarEdge optimisers need a stable AC reference to operate, so your Victron MultiPlus has to convincingly fake being the grid via its ESS or AC-coupled configuration — Victron's Fronius integration is far cleaner if you're AC-coupling.

On my cabin setup I just went full DC-coupled Victron end-to-end (MPPT + Multiplus + Fogstar lithium) and avoided this entire headache entirely.

If you're committed to SolarEdge specifically, the frequency-shift power control needs careful calibration or your inverter will either not throttle properly or just sulk and shut down at the worst possible moment.

One thing worth flagging specifically for a boat install — SolarEdge optimisers are designed around fixed panel strings on a stable structure, so the slight flex and movement you get on a narrowboat hull can occasionally cause optimiser comms dropouts. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing.

The more practical route I've seen work well on marine installs is feeding the SolarEdge output into the Victron via a suitable AC coupling arrangement, then letting the Victron handle all your battery and load management. Victron's frequency shifting will curtail the SolarEdge when batteries are full, though you'll want to double-check your SolarEdge firmware supports that properly.

What inverter sizes are you looking at? And are you planning grid connection at any point or purely off-grid? That'll change the advice quite a bit. 🛶
