This is almost certainly low-temperature protection kicking in. Lithium cells — whether LFP or otherwise — really don't like being discharged in sub-zero conditions, and most decent BMS units will cut out well before the cells are genuinely depleted to protect against permanent damage.

A few things worth checking:

  • What temperature was the battery actually at? Not ambient, but the cells themselves. They lag behind ambient considerably, especially in an insulated box.
  • Is this a self-heating battery or a standard one? Fogstar Drift and certain Victron Smart Lithium units have low-temp cutoff around 5°C for discharge. Some cheaper units are even more conservative.
  • Are you seeing a BMS alarm in VictronConnect, or is the MPPT/inverter just dropping out?

On my narrowboat last February we had three consecutive nights below -4°C and the Victron Smart Lithium 200Ah cut discharge at around 35–38% SOC because the cell temperature had dropped to roughly 4°C. Looked dramatic on the app but was entirely correct behaviour. Once the battery warmed up — partly from the engine alternator, partly just ambient rising — everything resumed normally with no capacity loss.

Worth noting: if you're seeing this repeatedly without cold temperatures, then I'd start worrying about a degraded cell or a BMS fault rather than normal protection logic.

What's your actual setup — is this on a boat, a van, static install? And which specific Victron battery is it? The 25.6V Smart Lithium has slightly different parameters to the older non-smart versions.

Others on here will likely have seen similar — would be useful to know if it's a pattern across multiple users this winter.

@VictronMaster this is really useful context — I've been scratching my head about something similar in my shepherd's hut setup.

Quick question though: does the BMS typically resume normal operation once the cells warm back up, or does it need a manual reset? Mine cut out during last week's cold snap and I wasn't sure whether to leave it or intervene.

Also — is there a minimum cell temperature threshold I should be aiming to maintain to prevent the cutout happening in the first place? I'm wondering whether adding some basic insulation around the battery enclosure would help, or whether I need to look at an actual heating solution like a self-heating LFP option from Fogstar or similar.

The hut isn't occupied constantly so I can't always be there to babysit it.

Nothing sadder than a £800 battery throwing a tantrum because it's a bit nippy — wrap it in some insulation or stick a small heat mat on it, your BMS will stop being dramatic once the cells are above about 5°C.

My static van setup has the battery compartment lined with 50mm kingspan and it's been rock solid through two Scottish winters, even the Fogstar cells I was convinced would die on me.

@EwanChapman shepherd's huts are basically fancy fridges in January, so you've got the same problem — thermal management isn't optional, it's just part of the cost of going off-grid without wanting to cry every February.

One thing worth adding — if you're regularly seeing cutouts around 40% SOC during cold snaps, it's worth checking whether your Victron has the low-temp charge/discharge thresholds configured correctly in the BMS settings. The default cutoff temperatures can sometimes be a touch conservative.

Also, @EwanChapman, for a shepherd's hut specifically, a small self-regulating heat mat underneath or alongside the battery can make a real difference. They draw minimal power and keep the cells above that critical threshold without babysitting.

The key thing people miss is that it's not just charging that's restricted — discharge protection kicks in too, which is why @NotAnElectrician80's insulation suggestion is genuinely good advice rather than just a workaround. Prevention beats waiting for the BMS to recover once temps rise again.

@BenStewart makes a fair point about the 40% SOC pattern — worth checking your battery temp sensor readings in the Victron app during those cutout events rather than just watching SOC.

In my van setup I had exactly this last February. The BMS wasn't just cutting on low temp — it was cutting earlier because internal resistance spikes in the cold, making the BMS think voltage had dropped further than it had. Essentially a false floor.

A few things that helped:

  • Self-heating blanket wrapped around the battery (12v, runs off the bank itself)
  • Setting charge/discharge limits in DVCC to be more conservative below 5°C
  • Keeping the van interior above freezing overnight where possible

The Victron GX logs will tell you exactly what triggered the cutout — check VE.Bus alarms for low battery temp events specifically.
