Victron Direct 12/1600 doesn't start

Had something similar crop up with my garden office setup last year — swapped out an older inverter for a Victron unit and spent a good few hours head-scratching before it would output anything useful.

Few things worth checking straight away:

  • Low voltage cutoff — Victron defaults are quite conservative. If your battery voltage is even slightly low it'll just sit there doing nothing. Check via the VictronConnect app what the low voltage disconnect is set to
  • VE.Direct vs VE.Bus — worth double-checking you've actually got the right model for your setup. Some configs need specific cable types to enable full functionality
  • DC cable sizing — the 12/1600 can pull serious amps at 12V under load. Undersized cables cause a voltage drop and it shuts down before it even gets going

What battery setup are you running? Lithium or lead acid makes a difference here — if it's LiFePO4 without a proper BMS signal the Victron can sometimes just refuse to play ball.

Also — and this sounds daft but caught me out — make sure you've physically pressed and held the power button long enough. There's a brief delay before it latches on.

Anyone else had startup issues with the 12/1600 specifically? Curious whether it's more common than I think. My shepherd's hut one fired up first time but the garden office was a right pain 😅

Had this exact grief on my boat last summer. Nine times out of ten it's the low voltage lockout — Victron sets the default cutoff quite conservatively and if your battery bank's been sitting a while it won't even attempt to start.

Chuck a multimeter on the DC terminals at the inverter itself, not just at the battery — voltage drop across undersized cable can fool you. On mine I had 12.4V at the battery but only 11.8V at the inverter terminals under any kind of load, which was enough to keep it locked out.

Also worth checking the remote on/off jumper on the back. Victron ships some units with that bridged, some without — if it's open the unit just sits there doing nothing and gives you no clues whatsoever.

@DaiYoung56 makes a fair point but worth checking the remote on/off terminals too — mine in the shepherd's hut sat there doing nothing for ages because the RJ45 jumper wasn't seated properly. Easy to miss.

Also double-check your cable gauge from the battery. The 1600W model pulls serious amps at startup and undersized cables will cause it to fault before it even tries to run. Had 10mm² on mine originally and it was marginal — swapped to 16mm² and the problems went away overnight.

The VictronConnect app is your friend here — plug in via Bluetooth and it'll show you any alarm history so you're not just guessing.

Great shout from both @DaiYoung56 and @HeatherGazer on the usual suspects. One thing I'd add that caught me out with mine — check whether the unit is actually getting a proper earth connection. The Multiplus and similar Victron units can be a bit precious about this; mine simply refused to do anything meaningful until I'd run a solid earth back to the battery negative rather than relying on the chassis ground I'd bodged in temporarily. Also worth a look at the VE.Direct port — if you've got a MPPT or GX device connected, occasionally a firmware mismatch can leave everything in a odd limbo state. Disconnect it and try the inverter standalone first. Simple things, but they save you tearing your hair out for hours. What's your battery voltage sitting at when you try to start it?

Good points from @DaiYoung56, @HeatherGazer, and @KenCrane covering the usual suspects. One thing nobody's mentioned yet — check your DC cabling is actually rated for the surge current. The 12/1600 can pull well over 150A momentarily at startup, and undersized cable will cause enough voltage drop to trigger the low-voltage protection even with a healthy battery. I learned this the hard way on my tiny house build; measured 12.8V at the battery terminals but only 11.4V at the inverter under load due to marginal 16mm² cable. Swapped to 35mm² and it fired up immediately. Also worth verifying your fuse or MEGA fuse holder isn't introducing resistance — corroded contacts are notorious for this.
