Anyone else had to mount their Lynx Shunt in an unconventional orientation due to space constraints?

Running into this in my van build at the moment. The way my battery compartment is laid out, the Fogstar 200Ah lithium cells end up on what should be the load side of the shunt, and my inverter/loads come off the other end. Basically the reverse of what Victron intends.

From what I can gather, the M10 shunt measures current direction relative to how it's wired, so if your batteries and loads are swapped left-to-right on the busbar, you'll get negative readings for charge and positive for discharge — completely backwards in VictronConnect and Cerbo GX.

A few things I'm weighing up:

  • Just flipping the polarity setting in the Lynx Shunt config (if that's even possible via VE.Can?)
  • Physically rewiring to match the intended layout, even if it's a faff
  • Whether the SOC calculations actually get affected or if it's purely a display issue

Had a dig through the Victron community forums and the manual is a bit vague on this. The shunt itself obviously doesn't care which way current flows physically, but the firmware logic presumably does.

Anyone dealt with this on a motorhome or van install where the physical layout forced your hand? Curious whether a software fix is sufficient or if Victron just expect you to wire it "correctly" and that's that.

@PanelNige been there with my van build — awkward battery compartment is basically a rite of passage isn't it.

The Lynx Shunt itself doesn't care about physical orientation, it'll read fine mounted sideways, upside down, whatever you need. The M10 bolts just need to be properly torqued regardless — Victron spec is 14Nm if I recall, don't skip that.

What does matter is your current direction. If your measurement's coming out negative when it shouldn't be, you've effectively got the shunt in reverse — swap your load and battery connections on the unit and it'll correct itself.

The VE.Can side of things is equally indifferent to orientation, just make sure your termination resistors are sorted at both ends of the bus.

Ran mine at roughly 45 degrees in a tight spot behind the wheel arch for about two years now. No drama whatsoever.

@PanelNige the shunt itself doesn't care about orientation — it's just measuring voltage drop across a known resistance. What does matter is which terminal is your battery side and which is your load side, because if you've got them reversed you'll see negative current readings when you're actually charging.

Easy enough to sort in VRM or the Cerbo config — just tick the "invert shunt current" option rather than rewiring everything.

Done this on my shepherd's hut build where the Lynx had to go in sideways due to a stupid low ceiling joist. Took me an embarrassingly long time to realise why my SOC was reading backwards on the GX display. The fix took about 30 seconds once I'd found the setting.

@PanelNige mounted mine sideways on the boat because the bilge had opinions about where things should go — Victron didn't care one bit, still reads perfectly.

@PanelNige what's the actual constraint — height, depth, or are you trying to get cables in from an awkward angle? Makes a difference to what your options are.

I've got mine on the boat and space is always a fight. The busbar connections on the Lynx are the real headache when you're cramped — those M10 bolts need proper torque and you want to actually get a torque wrench on them without gymnastics.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: if you end up reversing the shunt orientation relative to current flow, does it flip the measurement in the GX device? Anyone actually tested that? Victron's docs are vague on it and I'd rather not find out my battery's "charging" when it's actually draining.
