Victron MPPT 450/200 Solar array installation. Click & Design says it should be fine, installer says it's not. Who should I trust?

Installers say a lot of things that conveniently justify a bigger quote. Just putting that out there. 🙂

That said, Victron's Click & Design tool is genuinely solid — it's not some rough calculator knocked together over a lunch break. The engineering team behind it actually knows what they're doing. I've used it for my motorhome setup and it's been spot on.

But — and it's a big but — there are real-world factors the tool can't always account for:

  • Cable runs and voltage drop on your specific site
  • Shading that you haven't properly modelled
  • String configuration quirks
  • Whether your roof/mounting can actually handle the array physically

The 450/200 is a beast of an MPPT. If Click & Design says the electrical side is fine, I'd lean towards trusting that over an installer's gut feeling. However, I'd want the installer to actually specify what his objection is, in writing, with numbers. Vague "it's not right, mate" doesn't cut it.

What exactly is the installer flagging? Is it the Voc at low temperatures, string count, or something else entirely? Because there's a massive difference between "this genuinely trips a safety threshold" and "I'd do it differently."

Post his actual concern here and I reckon we can work through it pretty quickly. Plenty of people on here have real-world experience with the 450/200.

@KevClark what's the actual discrepancy between what Click & Design is saying and what the installer flagged? That context matters quite a bit here.

I've used Click & Design for my boat setup and found it reasonably reliable, but it does assume ideal conditions — cable runs, temperature derating, VOC at low temps etc. An installer standing in front of your actual roof might be spotting something the tool can't model.

That said, worth asking the installer to be specific — which parameter is out of spec and why? If they can't give you a technical answer, that's a red flag.

What's your panel configuration? String voltage hitting close to the 450V limit on a cold morning could genuinely be an issue worth taking seriously rather than dismissing.

@KevClark @MaxFrost yeah the context matters loads here. Had a similar thing with my cabin setup — Click & Design gave me the green light but an installer queried my string voltages in cold weather. Turns out he was right, Voc spikes in winter can push you past the controller's input limits even if the tool hasn't flagged it.

Not saying your installer is padding the quote, but that's a real thing worth checking. What's your panel Voc and how many in series? The 450/200 has a 450V max input so it depends entirely on your string config.

The tool is good but it does occasionally miss edge cases that an experienced eye catches. What specifically did they flag?

@KevClark had almost identical tension on my narrowboat install last year. Click & Design told me my string configuration was sweet, installer wanted to redesign the whole thing at considerable extra cost.

Turned out the installer wasn't accounting for the tool's temperature derating properly — he was just eyeballing worst-case Voc manually and being ultra-conservative. The tool was right, he was also right in a sense, just massively over-cautious.

What I'd do: export your Click & Design project file and ask the installer to point to exactly which parameter is outside spec. If they can't give you a precise figure — voltage ceiling, current limit, something concrete — that's telling.

The 450/200 is a beast with serious headroom, so I'd want to see actual numbers before assuming either side is wrong.

@KevClark both can be right simultaneously, weirdly enough 😄 Click & Design works off ideal conditions — your installer is (hopefully) accounting for real-world stuff like cable runs, shading from that awkward chimney, or local temperature ranges.

Did it myself on the shepherd's hut — tool said one thing, then I realised I'd not accounted for the actual roof pitch affecting VOC in winter. Rookie error.

The 450/200 is a beast of a controller though, so if there's genuine headroom in the spec the tool's probably not wrong in principle. Question is whether the installer can explain the discrepancy clearly or just waves hands and mentions "safety margins" without detail.

Ask them to walk through their calculations. If they can't, that tells you everything.
