Had a similar head-scratcher with my Multiplus 2 when I finally got round to fitting it in the shepherd's hut — bought it, shoved it in a cupboard for 18 months because life, and when I eventually wired it up properly it threw a temperature fault almost immediately.

Turned out the unit had been sitting in an unheated barn through two winters and the internal thermistor was reading ambient as some wildly incorrect value until it normalised. A few hours powered up and it sorted itself, but it had me convinced I'd somehow borked the install.

Worth checking a few things if you're seeing the same:

  • Ventilation clearances — Victron are fussy about this, minimum 10cm each side isn't just a suggestion
  • Ambient temp at install — if your battery compartment is cold, the Multiplus can be oversensitive until everything equilibrates
  • VE.Configure — connect via MK3-USB and check whether the temperature sensor input is actually enabled/configured correctly for your setup
  • Battery temp sensor — if you're running one, a dodgy connection reads as a fault rather than just "no sensor"

The 3000VA 12v is a chunky unit for 12v — what battery bank are you running with it? Asking because I've seen them thermal-limit hard when the bank can't sustain the discharge current, which presents as a temperature error but is really a voltage compensation issue under load.

Anyone else had these sit in storage and then misbehave on first power-up? Curious whether it's a common thing or I just have terrible luck with timing.

@CamperCarl the 18 months in storage is almost certainly your culprit. Victron units can throw temperature faults on first boot after long storage, especially if the internal temp sensor has drifted or there's condensation from being in an unheated space.

Worth pulling the cover and checking for any obvious moisture ingress first. Then do a full reset via VictronConnect before assuming anything's actually wrong with the unit.

I had something similar with my Multiplus in the static — turned out the ambient temp sensor was reading way off after sitting in a cold garage. Cleared itself after a couple of charge cycles once properly installed and running.

What's the actual error code showing in VictronConnect? The generic "temperature" label covers quite a few different fault states.

@Max1970 has a point but worth being methodical about it. Before assuming it's a storage issue, check the actual temperature sensor connections on the board — there's a known thing with the Multiplus where the internal NTC sensor can give spurious readings if the unit's been sat unused, basically just needs a few charge/discharge cycles to settle.

Also worth checking your VE.Config settings — if the temperature compensation values are misconfigured it can throw what looks like a temperature fault but isn't really one.

What's the ambient temp where it's installed? My static caravan install runs warm in summer and I had to adjust the high-temp cutoff threshold slightly via VE.Configure. Not saying lower it — just make sure it's set correctly for the install environment rather than default factory values.

What firmware version is it running?

@CamperCarl mine spent 14 months under my static caravan bed before I fitted it, thermal paste had basically turned to chalk dust — grabbed some Arctic Silver from Amazon, reseated the heatsink, temperature error vanished like my motivation to do this properly the first time.

@NotAnElectrician80 raises a good point about the paste but also worth checking the fan itself spins freely — I had a Multiplus (admittedly a smaller 12/1600) that had sat in my garage for about a year and the fan bearing had seized slightly, so it wasn't moving enough air even though the paste was fine. Just give the fan blades a gentle spin by hand with the unit powered down. If it's stiff or grinding, that's your issue right there. Replacement fans are pretty cheap and it's not a difficult swap. The temperature sensor itself can also throw false readings if the internal connections have gotten any condensation during storage — worth a careful visual inspection before you start replacing components.

@LindaJones69 makes a solid point about the fan — worth adding that on the Multiplus 12/3000 specifically, the fan controller board can develop dry solder joints after prolonged storage, causing the fan to appear to spin freely by hand but fail to receive its PWM signal under load. You can verify this by monitoring VE.Bus with VictronConnect whilst the unit is under sustained load — if the temperature climbs steadily but the fan never ramps up audibly, that's your culprit rather than the paste or the fan motor itself.

The temperature fault threshold on that unit is 65°C internal, so it'll shut down faster than you'd expect in a confined cupboard installation. Ensure you have genuine through-ventilation, not just an air gap. A 120mm exhaust fan on a thermostat makes an enormous difference — I run one in my narrowboat engine bay fitment.
