Had something eerily similar happen with my Victron Multiplus-II 3000 in the motorhome last summer. Pushed too many loads simultaneously — induction hob, air conditioning, and the EV charger trickle feed all competing — and tripped it hard into overload protection.

The bit that caught me out was exactly what you're describing: after the overload, the unit refused to go back into charge mode. The inverter side came back fine, but charging was just dead. No blinking lights suggesting a fault per se, just... nothing happening on the charge side.

What actually sorted it for me was a full power cycle sequence — not just the front panel switch, but physically disconnecting DC and AC in the right order:

  1. Disconnect AC input first
  2. Wait 60 seconds
  3. Disconnect DC (battery side)
  4. Wait another 2-3 minutes
  5. Reconnect DC, then AC

The BMS interaction is the tricky bit. If your BMS had latched into a protective state during the overload event, the Multiplus may be seeing the battery as "not ready" even after the BMS has nominally reset. Worth checking in VictronConnect whether the charger is actually seeing the battery voltage correctly, or whether it's sitting at 0V on the input — that's a telltale sign the BMS DVcc handshake hasn't re-established.

Are you running these ACE batteries with a Cerbo GX or any other comms link, or is it a standalone setup? That changes the diagnosis considerably.

Hey @Smudge, worth checking the VE.Bus error code on the display first — that'll tell you straight away whether it's thrown a protection fault or something more serious. After an overload event, mine needed a full AC input disconnect for a couple of minutes before it would reset properly, not just a soft restart. Also double-check your fusing on the DC side hasn't partially blown — I've seen that cause exactly this "won't charge" symptom where everything looks fine but there's insufficient current getting through. Download VictronConnect if you haven't already and pull the fault history, it's dead handy for diagnosing what actually triggered the shutdown. What's the battery state of charge showing currently?

@Moorey13 is right about the error codes, but also check whether the transfer switch relay has stuck — classic symptom after an overload event on the Multiplus-II. Seen it on my own setup.

On the boat I've tripped mine a couple of times running the induction hob carelessly. What saved me was having the ESS assistant configured with a proper input current limit — forces it to pull from batteries rather than slam the inverter with a spike it can't handle.

If the unit is genuinely refusing to charge at all rather than just not inverting, could also be a blown internal fuse on the AC input side. Not a difficult fix but you'll need to crack the case carefully.

Worth running VictronConnect via Bluetooth first though — the diagnostic data is surprisingly detailed and might save you unnecessary dismantling.

Done this exact thing at the cabin last spring — ran the induction hob and tried to top up the Leaf simultaneously. Multiplus threw a fit.

Once you've sorted the VE.Bus codes and relay (as above), also check whether the unit has gone into Storage mode accidentally via VE.Configure. Caught me out for a solid afternoon before I realised the thing had just quietly decided it wasn't needed anymore.

Also worth a look at your DC fuse on the battery side — mine had partially blown but still looked intact to the naked eye. Multimeter told a different story.

If you're running Fogstar cells, double-check the BMS comms too. Sometimes the BMS trips and the Multiplus just sits there looking gormless waiting for permission to charge again.

Really useful thread this — I've been nervous about doing something similar in my shepherd's hut build.

Quick question for the group: when the Multiplus recovers after an overload like this, does the PowerControl current limit setting get affected at all? I've got mine set fairly conservatively via VE.Configure but wondering whether an overload event could somehow reset or corrupt those parameters.

Also @Curly38 — did your Multiplus throw any fault history you could view retrospectively through VictronConnect? I'm trying to work out whether it's worth setting up VRM monitoring on mine before I finish the install, so I'd have a log if anything similar happened. Feels like it would've been handy in your situation to pinpoint exactly what tripped it.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet — have you checked whether the Multiplus is in Storage mode after the overload event? Mine once got stuck in a weird low-power state after I tripped it, and I only sorted it by doing a proper reset via VictronConnect rather than just cycling the power. Took me ages to work that out.

Also worth asking — what does the VRM portal show for the fault history if you've got it connected? That log can be really revealing about exactly what sequence of events caused the trip.
