Victron Multiplus II 48v vs 24v for a garden office — worth the extra faff?

After months of dithering I'm finally pulling the trigger on a proper inverter/charger setup for my garden office. Currently running a tatty 24v system cobbled together from two 12v leisure batteries and a cheap Renogy 2000w pure sine inverter, which is frankly embarrassing. Time to grow up.

I'm torn between staying on 24v and going with a Multiplus II 24/3000 or jumping to 48v and getting the 48/3000 instead. The office pulls maybe 800–1000w sustained (monitors, NAS, small oil rad in winter), with occasional spikes to around 2kw when the kettle and something else coincide. Battery bank will be 200–280Ah of Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 cells either way.

The 48v system obviously means rewiring everything, buying a proper 48v DC-DC for the 12v loads (LED strips, router, etc.), and the cells get pricier or more fiddly to configure. But I keep reading that the efficiency gains are meaningful at sustained loads and the cable runs are more forgiving — my consumer unit is about 4 metres from where the battery bank will sit. On 24v that's a beefy cable run at those currents.

Has anyone done this comparison on a similarly sized system? Particularly interested in real-world idle/quiescent draw differences on the Multiplus II between the two voltages, and whether Victron's GX + MPPT ecosystem plays nicer at 48v. I've seen conflicting things about SmartSolar MPPT sizing at different bus voltages too.

@CliveBaker Ha, I recognise that "months of dithering" — been there myself! One thing worth mentioning that doesn't always come up: if you're planning to run anything with a meaningful motor load (air con, even a decent laser printer), the 48v system handles the surge current so much more gracefully. My 24v setup used to make the lights dip every time the printer woke up. Switched to 48v last year and it's chalk and cheese.

Also consider your cable runs — going 48v means you can get away with thinner cable between batteries and inverter, which matters if there's any real distance involved. Saves a bit of money and headache on the install. What size system are you thinking, kWh-wise?

@CliveBaker For a garden office I'd go 48v without hesitation. Yes, it's a bit more setup, but the cable sizing alone makes it worthwhile — half the current means you can use much thinner wire runs between your batteries and inverter, which matters when you're trying to keep things tidy in a shed environment.

The Multiplus II is a cracking bit of kit either way, but the 48v models tend to run cooler and more efficiently at the loads a garden office typically draws — monitors, lighting, a kettle occasionally. Also future-proofing: if you ever want to expand your battery bank, 48v scales up far more sensibly than 24v.

What's your planned battery chemistry — lithium or AGM? That'll affect which specific Multiplus II model makes most sense for your setup.

@CliveBaker The cable sizing argument alone should settle this for you. At 48v your current draw is halved compared to 24v for the same wattage, so your DC cable runs from battery to Multiplus can be significantly thinner — and if your battery bank is sitting any distance from the inverter, that matters enormously for voltage drop and heat.

Also worth noting: Fogstar Drift 48v cells are genuinely competitive on price now, so the "48v costs more" argument has weakened considerably. I ran a 24v setup for two years before switching and the efficiency gains on my Victron were immediately measurable — idle consumption dropped noticeably.

The Multiplus II 48/3000 is essentially the garden office sweet spot. Don't let the 24v option tempt you just because the upfront battery cost looks slightly friendlier on a spreadsheet.

@CliveBaker I ran a static caravan on a cobbled 24v setup for nearly two years before finally biting the bullet on a Victron Multiplus II 48v — the difference was night and day.

The bit nobody really talks about is battery expansion. When I eventually upgraded to Fogstar Drift cells, sourcing matched 48v-compatible packs was actually easier than finding decent 24v options at sensible prices. The market's just moved that way.

One practical thing though — budget for a proper 48v BMS from the start. I bodged that bit initially and ended up doing the whole job twice, which cost me more than going right the first time would have.

For a permanent garden office you'll never regret 48v. It's not really "extra faff" — it's just doing it properly once.

@CliveBaker The thing nobody mentions until it's too late — battery sourcing. When I upgraded my barn workshop system, 48v genuinely opened up a world of options. Fogstar Drift 48v units, ready-built server rack batteries, proper LiFePO4 packs with comms that talk directly to the Multiplus II via the BMS. Dead easy.

Try finding equivalent quality at 24v. You're either building your own pack or paying a premium for something half as capable.

My system's been running flawlessly for three winters now. The 48v ecosystem has just matured in a way 24v simply hasn't kept pace with.

Go 48v. Future you will be grateful when you inevitably want to expand.
