Victron Multiplus keeps going into absorption way too early — anyone else seen this?

Mine did exactly this until I realised my Fogstar Drift cells had a slightly different voltage curve than what I'd programmed into VEConfig — basically the Multiplus was seeing a voltage spike under light load and thinking "job done, lads."

A few things worth checking:

  • Absorption voltage set too low — classic one, easy to miss
  • Cable voltage drop causing the Multiplus to measure higher than actual battery voltage
  • BMS comms — if you're running a Victron-compatible BMS via VE.Can or VE.Direct, make sure it's actually talking properly and not sending daft values
  • Adaptive absorption — worth disabling temporarily just to rule it out as the culprit

The real villain in my case turned out to be a dodgy temperature sensor skewing the voltage compensation, which is the kind of thing that makes you question every life decision that led you to off-grid living.

What battery chemistry are you running? LiFePO4 behaves very differently to AGM here, and the default Victron profiles are a bit optimistic about how clever they are out of the box. Stick your VEConfig settings in a screenshot if you can — someone here will spot the issue faster than Victron's support queue will even acknowledge your ticket.

Anyone else had the temperature compensation cause chaos like this?

@TID_Electric — worth checking whether you've got significant cable resistance between the battery and the Multiplus. Even modest resistance causes a voltage reading at the charger terminals to appear higher than actual battery voltage, so it hits the absorption threshold prematurely.

I'd also double-check your charge current setting relative to your battery capacity. Higher charge currents amplify that voltage drop/rise discrepancy considerably.

One thing I did on my static setup was enable the DVCC feature in Cerbo and let a proper BMS-sourced voltage reading drive the charge decisions rather than relying on the Multiplus's own terminal measurements. Made a noticeable difference to how cleanly it transitions between stages.

What cable cross-section are you running, and how long's the run?

@TID_Electric had this exact issue on my van build. Turned out my BMV-712 sense wires were picking up noise from the inverter itself — Multiplus was reacting to phantom voltage spikes rather than actual battery state.

Worth checking your absorption voltage threshold in VEConfig too. Mine was set too low (leftover from a previous profile) so it was triggering absorption at like 27.2V on a 24V system when the battery was nowhere near full.

@DucatoProject makes a fair point on cable resistance but I'd rule out the sensing side first — simpler fix if that's the culprit.

One thing neither of you have mentioned yet — check your absorption voltage setpoint relative to your actual resting cell voltage.

On my setup I found the default 57.6V (for 48V) was far too close to my Fogstar Drift's fully charged resting voltage, so even a brief regenerative spike from charging was enough to tip it over. Dropped absorption to 56.8V and the problem largely disappeared.

Also worth pulling up the VRM portal history if you're logging — the voltage graph will show you exactly when it's triggering absorption and whether it's a spike or a genuine climb. Makes diagnosis much quicker than guessing.

@DucatoProject's point about cable resistance is solid though — that works both ways. Voltage drop under load can mask problems, but low resistance can mean transient spikes hit the BMS/charger harder than expected.

@T5Wanderer raises something important, but I'd add one more layer to this story — temperature compensation.

My Fogstar Drift cells in the back of my Sprinter used to trigger early absorption constantly during winter. Took me ages to figure out that the Multiplus was compensating voltage upward in the cold, effectively lowering the threshold at which it thought absorption was due.

In VEConfig there's a temperature compensation coefficient (mV/°C/cell) — worth checking what yours is set to. If you've got a BMV with a temperature sensor feeding that data back, a cold battery bank can shift your effective absorption voltage by a surprising amount.

Dialled mine back to a much more conservative figure and the problem essentially disappeared overnight. The Fogstar cells don't really want aggressive temperature compensation anyway.
