Victron MultiPlus keeps switching to float too early — anyone else had this?

Had this exact saga with my MultiPlus-II 48/3000 last summer. Drove me absolutely mental for weeks.

The culprit in my case was the tail current setting being too aggressive. The MultiPlus was seeing the absorption current drop below the tail current threshold and going "right, job done!" when the battery was nowhere near fully charged. Classic case of the charger being technically correct but practically useless.

A few things worth checking:

  • Tail current % — default is often 4% of charger capacity, which can be far too high for LiFePO4. I dropped mine to 1% and the behaviour transformed overnight
  • Absorption time — if you're running adaptive absorption, it bases the time on the previous bulk phase. Short bulk = short absorption. Worth switching to fixed absorption temporarily to diagnose
  • BMS communication — are you running DVCC through a Cerbo or Venus GX? If your BMS is sending dodgy SOC data upstream, the MultiPlus will trust it over its own measurements. Fogstar Drift cells with a JK BMS here, and it took me ages to realise the BMS SOC calibration was off

What battery chemistry are you running? The answer changes dramatically depending on whether it's AGM, gel, or lithium. Also, which firmware version? There were some quirky absorption-related behaviours in certain VenusOS releases that Victron quietly patched.

Worth pulling up VRM portal logs if you have a GX device — the charge state graph will tell you immediately whether it's cutting short consistently or just occasionally misbehaving.

What does your absorption voltage look like when it drops to float? That number will tell us a lot.

@DailySolar — yes, tail current was my first suspicion too when I had similar grief with my MultiPlus-II 24/3000. Worth also checking your battery temperature compensation settings if you're running flooded lead-acid. On cooler days the absorption voltage target can appear "reached" prematurely because the compensation curve is miscalibrated, tricking the unit into dropping to float earlier than it should.

Also — have you ruled out a dodgy battery connection causing momentary voltage spikes? My setup was doing something similar and it turned out to be a loose terminal on one cell giving false high-voltage readings to the BMS.

VictronConnect logs are your friend here — the historical data shows exactly what the charger thought was happening at each transition point. Made diagnosing mine considerably less painful once I actually bothered looking properly! 😄

Had this on my boat setup — took me ages to track down. Worth checking your battery temperature compensation if you're using Victron's temp sensor. Mine was throwing off the charge algorithm because the sensor was mounted in a poorly ventilated spot, so the MultiPlus thought the batteries were warmer than they actually were and backed off early.

Also, if you're running Fogstar Drift or similar lithium cells with a BMS, make sure the DVCC settings in VictronConnect are properly configured. Sometimes the BMS sends a charge current reduction signal that the MultiPlus interprets as a cue to drop into float prematurely.

VE.Configure is worth a look too — the repeated absorption option can help if you're seeing consistent under-charging.

Had the exact same nonsense last winter with my cabin setup. Before you go down the tail current rabbit hole (already covered above), check your absorption voltage is actually set correctly for your battery chemistry. My Fogstar Drift cells were being cut short because the absorption target was 0.2V too low — MultiPlus thought it had hit the ceiling when it hadn't really.

Also worth firing up VictronConnect and watching the charge curve in real time rather than guessing. Saved me hours of head-scratching eventually.

One other thing nobody's mentioned — dodgy battery voltage sense wiring. If the MultiPlus is reading voltage at the wrong point you'll get phantom early float constantly. Measure at the terminals yourself and compare.

Really useful thread this. One thing nobody's mentioned yet — check your absorption voltage is actually being reached in the first place. If your cable sizing is marginal or you've got a dodgy connection introducing resistance, the MultiPlus thinks it's hitting target voltage at the terminals whilst the batteries are still well below it. Classic voltage drop issue.

I had this on my motorhome build with a 24V Victron setup — swapped to properly rated busbars and the phantom early-float completely disappeared overnight.

Worth pulling up VictronConnect and watching the absorption voltage in real time under load. If it's wobbling around rather than holding steady, look at your wiring before touching any algorithm settings. Far too many people adjust tail current when the root cause is actually upstream. Get the fundamentals solid first.
