Had this exact saga with my MultiPlus-II 48/3000 last summer. Drove me absolutely mental for weeks.
The culprit in my case was the tail current setting being too aggressive. The MultiPlus was seeing the absorption current drop below the tail current threshold and going "right, job done!" when the battery was nowhere near fully charged. Classic case of the charger being technically correct but practically useless.
A few things worth checking:
- Tail current % — default is often 4% of charger capacity, which can be far too high for LiFePO4. I dropped mine to 1% and the behaviour transformed overnight
- Absorption time — if you're running adaptive absorption, it bases the time on the previous bulk phase. Short bulk = short absorption. Worth switching to fixed absorption temporarily to diagnose
- BMS communication — are you running DVCC through a Cerbo or Venus GX? If your BMS is sending dodgy SOC data upstream, the MultiPlus will trust it over its own measurements. Fogstar Drift cells with a JK BMS here, and it took me ages to realise the BMS SOC calibration was off
What battery chemistry are you running? The answer changes dramatically depending on whether it's AGM, gel, or lithium. Also, which firmware version? There were some quirky absorption-related behaviours in certain VenusOS releases that Victron quietly patched.
Worth pulling up VRM portal logs if you have a GX device — the charge state graph will tell you immediately whether it's cutting short consistently or just occasionally misbehaving.
What does your absorption voltage look like when it drops to float? That number will tell us a lot.
