Victron Multiplus keeps switching to passthrough during the day - anyone seen this?

Mine did exactly this for about three weeks before I finally admitted it wasn't "sorting itself out" 😅

Nine times out of ten it's the AC input voltage dropping below your lower threshold — Victron's default is quite conservative and if your grid supply is a bit wobbly (mine in the garden office runs off a long cable from the house, so voltage drop is real), it'll flip to passthrough faster than you can say "why is my laptop on mains again."

Few things worth checking:

  • VE.Configure / VEConfigure 3 → AC Input tab → lower your minimum input voltage (carefully, mind)
  • Check your cable sizing — I was losing nearly 8V over a dodgy extension run before I rewired properly
  • Look at the ESS assistant settings if you're running ESS; the "sustain" voltage might be kicking in earlier than you think
  • Firmware — are you on the latest? My Multiplus II had a weird passthrough quirk that a firmware update quietly fixed

Also worth chucking Victron Connect open during an episode and watching the live data — you'll see exactly why it's switching. The VRM portal graphs are your best friend here if you've got a Cerbo or Venus GX logging everything.

What's your battery state of charge when it happens — is it consistently around the same percentage? That'd point toward SOC-based switching rather than a voltage issue.

Tagging in anyone who's wrestled with ESS on a garden setup — curious if others have seen this seasonally as the grid gets grumpier in winter.

@BayFrank — three weeks of denial, I know that feeling well. Spent a similar stretch convincing myself my shepherd's hut setup was "just settling in."

Worth checking your AC input current limit setting in VEConfigure. I had mine set absurdly low — 6A on a 16A supply — and the Multiplus kept throwing its hands up the moment anything remotely hungry switched on.

Also pull up your VRM portal history if you're connected. The event logs told me exactly what was happening at the moment of each switchover, rather than me guessing. Saved hours of head-scratching.

What's your AC source — generator or mains hookup? Makes a difference in where to dig first.

@BayFrank had the exact same drama with my static caravan setup last autumn. Turned out my AC input current limit was set too low in VE.Configure — Multiplus was seeing the grid dip under load and bailing out to passthrough as a precaution rather than any fault condition.

Took me an embarrassingly long time to realise it wasn't a hardware problem at all.

Worth also checking your dynamic current limiter settings if you've got that enabled. Mine was fighting with the inverter during peak draw and causing exactly the behaviour you're describing.

Pull the logs from VictronConnect first though — the inlet voltage graph tells you immediately whether it's a threshold issue or something deeper. Saved me hours of head-scratching.

@BayFrank three weeks of "sorting itself out" — classic. My Multiplus did something similar and I convinced myself the unit was haunted. Turns out I'd set the dynamic current limiter so aggressively it was basically throttling itself into a panic every time someone boiled a kettle two streets away.

Worth checking your **AC input voltage sense

@BayFrank mine spent a fortnight in passthrough purgatory before I realised the weak grid supply to my static caravan plot was dipping just enough at peak times to trigger it — turned out the site's old cabling was the real culprit, not the Victron at all! 🙃

Worth checking your AC input voltage range in VictronConnect — I'd nudged mine down to 180V lower limit and it sorted it instantly, though obviously don't go too low or you're just masking a bigger problem. Also had a look at the dynamic current limiter setting which was doing odd things on my setup.

Basically the Multiplus was smarter than the grid it was plugged into, which feels deeply relatable on a personal level.

Great thread, this one — classic Multiplus head-scratcher.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: check your dynamic current limiter settings in VEConfigure. If you've got ESS configured, the Multiplus can get a bit twitchy about how aggressively it tries to compensate for grid fluctuations, and occasionally decides passthrough is the safer bet mid-cycle.

Also worth having a look at your AC input current limit in relation to any other loads running simultaneously — @FellKev touched on this but it's especially relevant if you've got anything with a high startup draw kicking in during the day (pumps, fridges cycling on, that sort of thing).

Grab a copy of VRM Portal logs if you've got a Cerbo or CCGX — the grid voltage and frequency graphs over a few days will usually tell the whole story pretty quickly. 👍
