Victron Multiplus keeps throwing a low battery alarm but cells are reading fine

Had this exact same gremlin with my garden office setup last year. Turned out my battery voltage sense wires had a dodgy crimp — Multiplus was reading voltage at the inverter terminals rather than the actual battery, so voltage drop under load was triggering the alarm even though the cells themselves were perfectly happy.

Worth checking a few things:

  • Voltage sense wiring — if you're not using the dedicated sense terminals, the Multiplus just reads at its own DC terminals which can be misleading under load
  • DC cable sizing — undersized cables will cause enough voltage drop to fool it
  • VE.Configure settings — specifically the DC input low shutdown and low restart voltages, easy to accidentally have these set too conservatively

Also had a mate who had this with a Fogstar Drift battery — BMS was briefly sagging the voltage on high loads before the cells had actually dropped, so the Multiplus saw a genuine dip even though resting voltage was fine. Turned out he needed to tweak the low battery threshold slightly.

What battery are you running and what are your current DC input voltage thresholds set to in VE.Configure? That'd narrow it down a lot.

Anyone else seen this with particular BMS configurations worth flagging here?

@WattHamish oh this rabbit hole is deep and I've fallen down it twice now with my shepherd's hut build.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet — check your VE.Bus System Configurator settings for the "DC input low restart voltage." Mine was set comically conservative from factory, basically triggering alarms on a battery that had plenty left in it. Took me an embarrassing amount of time to find it buried in the Multiplus assistant settings.

Also worth logging the actual battery voltage via VRM portal over 24 hours — you might spot brief voltage sags under load that aren't visible when you're just spot-checking with a multimeter. My Fogstar cells looked fine statically but were sagging hard the moment the kettle kicked on.

@WattHamish nailed the classic culprit, but worth also checking your BMS comms if you're running a Fogstar Drift or similar with VE.Bus Smart Dongle — I had a situation on my static caravan setup where the Multiplus was receiving conflicting voltage data from both the sense wires and the DVCC stack, and they disagreed by enough to trigger the alarm repeatedly.

The fix was surprisingly boring: set DVCC > Use external voltage sensor = disabled temporarily, confirm which reading you actually trust, then re-enable with a clear hierarchy.

Also check your cable cross-section between BMS and inverter terminals. Undersized DC wiring creates a voltage drop under load that the Multiplus absolutely will interpret as low battery. Victron's own calculator is worth five minutes of your time before you go chasing firmware gremlins.

@VivaroNomad worth adding to the comms point — if you're running DVCC enabled on the Cerbo, make sure the Multiplus is actually receiving the BMS-reported SOC rather than calculating its own. I had this exact confusion in my shepherd's hut build where the Multiplus was throwing low battery alarms based on its internal voltage curve, completely ignoring what the Fogstar Drift's BMS was reporting via VE.Bus.

Check in VRM or the local Cerbo display under Device List → Battery Monitor — if it's showing "Multiplus" as the selected battery monitor rather than your BMS, that's your issue. Switch it to the BMS and let DVCC do its job properly.

Also worth logging voltage over 24 hours in VRM to catch any momentary sag under load — sometimes it's a genuine sag rather than a sensing fault.

@LiamFrost70 that DVCC point is a good shout — had me scratching my head for a week on my static caravan setup before someone pointed me at the firmware versions.

Quick question for the thread though — does anyone know if the low battery alarm threshold can be misconfigured in VEConfigure and just look like a voltage sensing issue? I'm wondering if mine was actually set too high from a previous owner's config and was triggering at what it thought was a legitimate low voltage event, rather than being a wiring or comms problem at all?

Asking because I've got a similar gremlin cropping up again on a second unit and the sense wires all look solid this time. Running a 48v Fogstar Drift pack if that makes any difference to the thresholds people are seeing.

Good points all round. One thing nobody's mentioned yet — check your low battery shutdown voltage setting in the Multiplus itself. If it's set too high (say 48.0V on a 48V system), you'll get spurious alarms even with healthy cells.

Also worth looking at AC load spikes. A fridge compressor or kettle kicking in can cause a momentary voltage sag at the inverter terminals that trips the alarm, even if your resting voltage is fine. Doesn't necessarily mean dodgy sense wires — could just be undersized cable runs causing resistive drop under load.

Ran into this myself when I added an EV charger to my setup. Multiplus was screaming but cells were laughing. Bumped my cable cross-section up and the alarms vanished overnight.

What's your cable run length and conductor size?
