Victron Multiplus keeps throwing a low battery alarm but voltages look fine to me

Had something very similar on my narrowboat last winter and it drove me mad for weeks. The Multiplus was alarming at what looked like perfectly reasonable voltages on the display, but the issue turned out to be voltage sag under load rather than the resting voltage being genuinely low.

When you're pulling serious current, even a short cable run with slightly undersized wire can create enough of a voltage drop that the Multiplus sees something quite different at its terminals compared to what your battery monitor is reading. Worth checking:

  • Are your battery cables adequately sized for the inverter's max draw?
  • How close is the Multiplus physically to your battery bank?
  • Have you checked the connections are properly torqued? Loose terminals are sneaky culprits

The other thing I'd look at is whether your low battery cut-off threshold in VEConfig is set sensibly. Mine had been left at factory defaults which were a bit aggressive for my Fogstar lithium setup — took me ages to realise.

Also, are you running a BMV or SmartShunt? If the Multiplus is relying solely on its own voltage sensing rather than a proper battery monitor connected via VE.Bus, it can be a bit unreliable.

What battery chemistry are you running and what's the cut-off currently set to in VEConfig? That might help narrow it down. Anyone else had this on a similar setup?

Classic hidden voltage drop issue this. The Multiplus reads voltage at its own terminals but if your battery cabling has any resistance (dodgy connection, undersized cable, long run) there'll be a gap between what it sees and actual battery voltage under load.

Few things worth checking:

  • Measure directly at the battery terminals under load, not at the Multiplus
  • Check all connections for corrosion or loose terminations — narrowboats are brutal for this
  • Look at your battery sense wiring — Victron lets you run separate sense cables directly to the battery so the unit gets accurate readings regardless of cable drop
  • In VictronConnect you can also tweak the low voltage alarm threshold if it's genuinely just set a touch high

The sense wire fix is usually the quickest win. Made a massive difference on my garden office setup when I had similar weirdness with my Fogstar cells.

@AlexJones had this exact thing on my cabin setup. Worth checking your battery BMS — some cheaper units will throttle output current before the terminal voltage actually drops, so the Multiplus sees a momentary sag under load that triggers the alarm even though resting voltage looks fine.

Also check your low battery shutdown setting in VEConfigure. Default is often set quite conservatively and doesn't always suit lithium properly. Mine was triggering at 48.0V on a 48V system which was way too cautious for my Fogstar cells.

Two things to try:

  • Log with VictronConnect during the alarm and check the actual minimum voltage dip
  • Temporarily reduce your inverter's max charge current to see if it's a BMS protection response

The DVCC settings can also interact weirdly with third-party BMS units if you're running one.

@AlexJones worth checking whether you've got a temperature compensation cable fitted on the Multiplus. Without it, the unit doesn't know the battery bank is cold, so it's making charge/voltage decisions based on assumed ambient temps. In winter on a narrowboat that'll be miles off reality.

Also — what battery chemistry are you running? If it's LiFePO4 and you've got the Multiplus still configured for AGM/gel profiles, the voltage thresholds will be completely wrong from the start. Victron's VictronConnect app makes it dead easy to check your current charge profile settings. Spent an afternoon sorting exactly this on my motorhome last autumn before realising the previous owner had left it on a flooded lead acid profile with Fogstar lithiums sitting behind it.

@AlexJones one thing nobody's mentioned yet — have a look at your battery interconnects if you're running a bank of batteries rather than a single unit. Dodgy or corroded busbars between cells can create a situation where individual batteries are sagging under load even though the overall resting voltage looks fine. I had this on my off-grid setup in Cornwall; everything read 12.8V sitting idle but the moment the inverter pulled any serious current, one poorly connected battery in the bank was dragging the whole lot down momentarily. The Multiplus catches those brief dips even if your regular voltmeter misses them entirely. Try load testing each battery individually if you can, or at minimum get a clamp meter on each interconnect cable while running a decent load. Made a world of difference once I sorted mine.
