Victron Multiplus keeps throwing a low battery alarm but voltages look fine to me

Had almost exactly this with my garden office setup last year. The Multiplus was screaming low battery at me but the BMS was showing 51.2V on a 48V system — looked perfectly healthy on the face of it.

Turned out the issue was voltage sag under load. The resting voltage was fine but the moment I kicked on anything substantial, it was dropping enough under load to trip the alarm threshold. The Victron was seeing a momentary dip that the BMS display wasn't really capturing properly because it wasn't sampling fast enough.

Few things worth checking:

  • DC cable sizing — undersized cables create resistance and exaggerate voltage drop under load
  • Battery connections — even slightly loose terminals will cause this, more than people realise
  • The low battery alarm threshold in VEConfigure — it may have been set too conservatively from factory or a previous owner

You can tweak the alarm and shutdown thresholds in VEConfigure (or VictronConnect depending on your unit). Worth connecting up and actually watching what the DC input voltage does during load rather than at rest. The difference can be surprising.

What battery chemistry are you running and what's your typical load? If you're on LiFePO4 with a Fogstar or similar, the BMS itself could also be doing something odd at the comms level if you've got it talking to the Multiplus via DVCC.

Would be interested to know what your cable run length is too — that's caught a few people out on this forum before.

@FormerMariner24 classic Victron drama queen behaviour — mine did the exact same thing in the static caravan and turned out the battery voltage under load was dipping way below what the resting voltage suggested, so check your actual discharge curve rather than trusting that pretty idle number! 🔋

@FormerMariner24 worth checking whether the alarm is triggering under load rather than at rest — 51.2V sitting idle tells you very little. Chuck a decent load on it and watch what happens to voltage under stress.

@CotswoldNomad makes a good point about load conditions — I'd add that voltage alone is often misleading with lithium. The Multiplus has a separate DC input low voltage alarm threshold in VEConfigure that's independent of whatever your BMS is reporting.

Worth checking:

  • What's your DC input low shut-down and DC input low pre-alarm set to in VEConfigure?
  • Are you monitoring actual current draw at the point the alarm fires?

On my static caravan setup I found the Multiplus was seeing a momentary voltage dip under surge load that the BMS display simply wasn't catching — BMS showed healthy but the Multiplus sampled a 2-3V sag during a compressor start.

Also worth ruling out a poor connection on the DC busbars — resistance causes disproportionate sag under load. Victron's own guidance suggests anything over 0.5V drop cable-to-battery warrants investigation.

@FormerMariner24 one thing nobody's mentioned yet — check your battery cable sizing and connections. Even with decent voltage at rest, a poor connection or undersized cable will cause a significant voltage drop the moment load kicks in. The Multiplus sees that drop at its terminals rather than at the battery itself, so it panics even though your BMS is reporting fine. I'd grab a multimeter and measure directly at the Multiplus DC input terminals under load and compare that to what the BMS is showing simultaneously. If there's more than a few tenths of a volt difference, you've found your culprit. Loose lugs on the busbar are a surprisingly common cause — worth giving everything a proper torque check while you're at it.

@FormerMariner24 @CotswoldVanLifer raises a valid point on cabling, but I'd also look specifically at your Multiplus's Low Battery Voltage and Dynamic Cut-Off settings in VE.Configure. Victron's defaults are often set for lead-acid and won't suit lithium at all — your cut-off curve could be tripping early under transient loads even when resting voltage looks fine.

On my narrowboat I had similar grief until I adjusted the dynamic cut-off table properly for our Fogstar cells. The Multiplus is actually quite clever here — it factors in discharge current — but the factory defaults are genuinely rubbish for LiFePO4.

Worth grabbing VE.Configure3, connecting via the MK3-USB interface, and checking the Inverter tab. The values there might surprise you.
