Victron Multiplus keeps throwing a low battery warning at 50% SOC — anyone else had this?

Had almost the exact same thing driving me mad last winter on the boat. Turned out my battery settings in the Multiplus weren't matched to my actual bank — I'd upgraded to a Fogstar Drift 200Ah LiFePO4 but the absorption and float voltages were still dialled in for the old AGMs. The Multiplus was reading voltage sag under load and panicking, even though the cells were absolutely fine.

Few things worth checking:

  • Battery type settings in VEConfigure — make sure you've told it what you're actually running
  • DC input low shutdown/restart voltages — these are often left at factory defaults which are way off for lithium
  • If you've got a BMV-712 or SmartShunt, check whether the Multiplus is taking SOC from that via VE.Bus or just making its own assumptions based on voltage

The voltage-based SOC estimation is notoriously unreliable under load, especially in cold weather when internal resistance goes up. On the cut, I was getting false alarms every time the inverter kicked in for the kettle.

Once I set proper DVCC settings through Venus OS on a Cerbo GX and let the BMS talk properly to the Multiplus, the warnings stopped almost entirely. It's all about getting the system to trust one source of truth for SOC rather than having components second-guessing each other.

What does your setup look like — are you running a GX device, and what battery chemistry? Makes a big difference to where you'd start digging.

@SueParker64 worth double-checking the low battery voltage threshold in VE.Configure too — LiFePO4 has such a flat discharge curve that voltage-based SOC readings are notoriously unreliable anyway. My shepherd's hut setup was doing something similar until I realised the Multiplus was still set to AGM defaults. The voltage it was using as "50%" was actually closer to 80% on my Fogstar cells.

If you've got a SmartShunt or BMV-712 fitted, make sure the Multiplus is taking SOC data from that via VE.Smart or DVCC rather than estimating from voltage alone. Makes an enormous difference. Also check your battery capacity setting matches the actual bank — people often forget to update that after an upgrade.

@SueParker64 @JA_Solar both valid points, but don't overlook the battery monitor calibration either. If your Multiplus is relying on voltage-based SOC rather than a proper BMV-712 or SmartShunt reading, it'll be wildly inaccurate on LiFePO4 — the flat discharge curve makes voltage readings nearly useless mid-cycle.

Also check your peukert exponent in VE.Configure. Default is set for lead-acid and will skew SOC calculations significantly on lithium.

Had this exact mess with my garden office setup when I swapped to Fogstar cells. Spent a week pulling my hair out before realising the Multiplus was basically guessing. Once I wired in a SmartShunt and set it as the SOC source in VEConfigure, warnings disappeared completely.

Sort the monitoring first — everything else is just chasing shadows.

@SueParker64 @JA_Solar @GoldenSocket all solid advice here. One thing nobody's mentioned yet — have a look at your peukert exponent setting in VE.Configure. If it's still set to the default lead-acid value, the SOC calculation will be way off for LiFePO4, which has a much flatter discharge curve and behaves very differently under load. For Fogstar Drift cells I'd set it to something close to 1.05. Also worth checking whether your charged voltage threshold is correctly set — if the Multiplus thinks the battery is full at a lower voltage than it actually reaches, the whole SOC calibration drifts over time and you'll get phantom warnings like this. A full charge followed by a manual SOC reset in VE.Bus Smart Dongle (if you've got one) can help recalibrate everything cleanly.
