Victron Multiplus keeps throwing a low battery warning but cells are reading fine

Had almost the exact same saga on my narrowboat last winter. Everything looked fine on the BMS display — cells balanced, voltages healthy — but the Multiplus kept throwing fits.

Turned out my battery cable runs were slightly undersized for the sustained loads I was pulling. Under load, there was enough voltage drop across the cables that the Multiplus was seeing a lower voltage at its terminals than what the BMS was reporting at the cells. Classic hidden resistance problem.

A few things worth checking:

  • Cable diameter and length — longer runs need beefier cable, full stop
  • Terminal connections — I found a slightly loose lug on my negative busbar that was causing resistance under load. Easy to miss visually
  • Where the Multiplus is taking its voltage reading from — if it's not sensing directly at the battery, it'll always be reading a slightly pessimistic figure
  • Low battery restart/shutdown thresholds in VEConfig — these can be set surprisingly conservatively from the factory

The VEConnect app is your friend here. Pull up the live data and watch what voltage the Multiplus actually thinks it's seeing versus what your BMS reports simultaneously under load. That gap tells the story.

Also worth asking — what cells are you running and which BMS? Some cheaper BMS units have a slight reporting lag that can cause confusion when the Multiplus responds faster to a voltage sag than the BMS does.

Anyone else found this to be a cable/connection issue rather than a settings one? Curious whether it's more common on longer boat installations where runs naturally get longer.

@Jess1989 Really curious what your root cause turned out to be — your post got cut off mid-sentence there!

One thing worth checking that catches people out: the voltage sense wires. If your Multiplus is reading battery voltage at the inverter terminals rather than at the battery itself, any resistance in the cabling will make it think the battery is lower than it actually is under load. Even a couple of milliohms adds up when you're pulling decent current.

Also worth checking the DVCC settings in VictronConnect if you're running a compatible BMS — letting the BMS communicate directly with the Multiplus often resolves these phantom warnings entirely rather than relying purely on voltage measurements.

@Jess1989 Worth checking whether your BMS has a separate communications cable to the Multiplus or if it's just relying on voltage-based protection. A lot of setups look fine on the BMS display but the Multiplus is making its own voltage judgement independently — and if your battery cabling has any resistance (loose terminals, undersized wire), the Multiplus sees a bigger voltage drop under load than the BMS does.

Had a similar head-scratcher on my static caravan build — turned out to be a slightly corroded Anderson connector causing maybe 0.3V drop at load. Multiplus panicked, BMS shrugged.

Quick test: what does the Multiplus DC input voltage show in VictronConnect during a high load event? Compare that to your BMS cell total. Any meaningful gap and you've found your culprit.

Classic case of the BMS lying through its teeth while the Multiplus catches the actual problem — had this exact nightmare on my static caravan setup last February.

The Multiplus measures voltage under load, whereas most BMS displays show resting voltage; even a dodgy cell connection or undersized cabling will cause a dramatic voltage sag the moment you pull real current, which triggers the low battery alarm despite everything looking rosy on the display.

Try this: watch your Victron VRM (or a basic clamp meter) during a decent load spike — kettle, inverter microwave, whatever — and see if voltage nosedives briefly. My money's on either:

  • High internal resistance in ageing cells (Fogstar Drift cells are worth considering as a refresh)
  • Loose busbars or undertorqued terminal connections

Torque your connections to spec first — it's free and fixes embarrassingly many "mysterious" faults.

Had almost identical grief on my motorhome build last year. The culprit nobody mentions: cable resistance under load.

Your BMS reads resting cell voltage. The Multiplus sees actual terminal voltage during a 2000W inverter surge — completely different story if your interconnects have even slight resistance. A 0.05Ω cable issue becomes a 10V drop at 200A.

Grab a clamp meter and actually load the system while watching Victron's VRM portal in real-time. The BMS dashboard tells you sweet nothing about what's happening at that precise moment the alarm fires.

@Jess1989 — the narrowboat environment makes this worse because connectors corrode faster than you'd believe. I've replaced perfectly looking lugs that measured awful with a multimeter under load.

Torque check every terminal too. Seriously. Every. Single. One.
