Had almost the exact same saga on my narrowboat last winter. Everything looked fine on the BMS display — cells balanced, voltages healthy — but the Multiplus kept throwing fits.
Turned out my battery cable runs were slightly undersized for the sustained loads I was pulling. Under load, there was enough voltage drop across the cables that the Multiplus was seeing a lower voltage at its terminals than what the BMS was reporting at the cells. Classic hidden resistance problem.
A few things worth checking:
- Cable diameter and length — longer runs need beefier cable, full stop
- Terminal connections — I found a slightly loose lug on my negative busbar that was causing resistance under load. Easy to miss visually
- Where the Multiplus is taking its voltage reading from — if it's not sensing directly at the battery, it'll always be reading a slightly pessimistic figure
- Low battery restart/shutdown thresholds in VEConfig — these can be set surprisingly conservatively from the factory
The VEConnect app is your friend here. Pull up the live data and watch what voltage the Multiplus actually thinks it's seeing versus what your BMS reports simultaneously under load. That gap tells the story.
Also worth asking — what cells are you running and which BMS? Some cheaper BMS units have a slight reporting lag that can cause confusion when the Multiplus responds faster to a voltage sag than the BMS does.
Anyone else found this to be a cable/connection issue rather than a settings one? Curious whether it's more common on longer boat installations where runs naturally get longer.
