Victron MultiPlus tripping on startup with my well pump - anyone else had this?

Had this exact issue last year with my emergency backup setup. The MultiPlus is brilliant kit but it absolutely hates high inrush loads — well pumps are notorious for it because a typical submersible can pull 6-8x its running current on startup.

A few things worth checking:

Transfer switch timing — if you're running the MultiPlus in UPS mode, tighten up the transfer time. Sometimes the pump catches the inverter mid-transition and the sudden load spike triggers the overload protection.

PowerAssist settings — if you've got mains input available, make sure PowerAssist is actually enabled in VictronConnect. It should help buffer those startup spikes by drawing from both battery and grid simultaneously.

Soft starter — honestly the most reliable fix I found was fitting an external soft starter on the pump motor itself. A Sollatek or similar unit costs £40-80 and reduces that inrush dramatically. Made a night-and-day difference on mine.

Battery cable sizing and connections — loose or undersized cables cause voltage sag under inrush, which the MultiPlus interprets as a fault condition. Worth double-checking your connections are properly torqued.

What MultiPlus model are you running and what's the pump rated at? The 1600VA units will struggle more than the 3000VA with anything above a 750W pump motor. Also worth checking the #overload fault log in VEConfigure — it'll tell you whether it's tripping on current or voltage limits.

Anyone else tackled pump loads with their Victron setup? Curious whether the newer MultiPlus-II firmware handles inrush any better than the older units.

@Turbo had this with my van setup when I tried running a compressor fridge — same inrush problem in miniature.

Worth checking if your MultiPlus is configured with the PowerControl / AC input current limit set too conservatively. Also, have you tried enabling the soft-start assistant in VEConfigure? It doesn't fix the inrush directly but can help the inverter handle the initial surge better.

The other angle — what's your battery situation? If the cells can't deliver enough instantaneous current, the MultiPlus will protect itself. I switched to Fogstar Drift cells and it made a noticeable difference to surge handling.

Some people swear by fitting a capacitor bank inline for motor loads but I've never gone that route myself.

The inrush on well pumps can be absolutely savage — I've seen 6-7x running current on startup which will trip even a healthy MultiPlus.

Few things worth trying:

  • Soft starter fitted to the pump motor — proper game changer, brings inrush right down
  • Check your PowerAssist settings in VE.Configure, sometimes tweaking the AC input current limit helps
  • Make sure your battery bank is beefy enough; a weak bank will sag under inrush and trigger low voltage cutoff before the inverter even has chance to react

Mine's a 24V system running the shepherd's hut — I had similar grief with a pressure pump until I sorted the soft starter. Fogstar cells helped too because the internal resistance is low enough to handle surge demand without collapsing.

What firmware version are you on? Some older MultiPlus firmware had quirks around overload response time.

Good shout from @JA_Solar on the inrush figures — I'd add that a soft starter is often the most cost-effective fix here rather than upsizing the inverter. Picked up a Emotron or similar unit for my pump setup and it made an immediate difference.

Also worth checking your MultiPlus transfer switch settings in VictronConnect — there's an assistants option to tweak the overload trip curve. Victron's default is quite conservative.

One thing nobody's mentioned: battery cable gauge matters hugely during inrush. Even a well-sized inverter will nuisance-trip if there's too much resistance on the DC side causing voltage sag. My Fogstar Drift cells barely blinked once I upgraded from 35mm² to 70mm² cable runs.

What capacity MultiPlus are you running? The 3000VA handles pump inrush noticeably better than the 2000VA in my experience.

Great thread, this one! I had almost identical drama when I first tried running a water pump from my MultiPlus in the van — the inverter would just throw its hands up and refuse.

What nobody's mentioned yet is checking your DC cable sizing and connection quality before spending money on soft starters. A marginal cable run or dodgy terminal can cause enough voltage sag on that inrush spike to push the MultiPlus into protection mode — even if the inverter should theoretically handle the load.

Sorted mine by upgrading to proper tinned copper cable and torquing every terminal properly. Night and day difference.

That said, @ExpertCamper is right that a soft starter is elegant — just rule out the boring stuff first. Victron's own forums have a cracking thread on voltage sag diagnostics if you want to go down that rabbit hole. 🐇
