Victron Multiplus tripping out when microwave kicks in - any ideas?

Had almost exactly this scenario last summer when I was commissioning the garden office setup. Microwave was the one appliance that kept bringing everything to its knees.

The culprit in my case was the inrush current on startup — microwaves are notorious for it. Even a modest 800W unit can spike to 3-4x that for a split second when the magnetron fires up.

A few things worth checking:

  • What's your Multiplus rated at? The 12/3000 and 24/3000 variants handle inrush very differently in my experience
  • Battery cable gauge and length — undersized cables mean voltage sag under load, which can trigger the Multiplus protection circuits before the inverter even gets a chance to cope
  • SOC at time of tripping — if your bank is sitting below 50%, it'll struggle to deliver peak current without the BMS or the Victron itself pulling the plug

I ended up tweaking the AC input current limit and the dynamic current limiter settings in VictronConnect, which made a surprising difference. Also worth looking at the transfer switch settings if you're running any shore power alongside it.

One thing I'd genuinely try first though — pop your microwave on a different circuit temporarily and see if it's purely the startup spike or something else going on with your wiring.

What battery chemistry are you running? AGM here obviously (hence the username 😄), and they're not always thrilled about sudden high-current demands. Lithium folk tend to have an easier time with this sort of thing.

Curious what others have found — anyone used the PowerAssist feature to help bridge these spikes?

the inrush current on startup rather than the steady-state draw. Microwaves have a transformer-based power supply that pulls a massive spike the moment you press start - we're talking potentially 3-4x the rated wattage for a fraction of a second.

What sorted it for me was going into the Victron settings via VictronConnect and bumping up the AC input current limit slightly, plus checking the dynamic current limiter was enabled. Also worth looking at your battery cable sizing and connections - any resistance there gets brutally exposed when something demands current that sharply.

@AGM_Geek what size Multiplus have you got and what's your battery bank? A 2kVA unit can genuinely struggle with some microwaves regardless of settings. Might also be worth checking if your microwave has an inverter-type power supply - those tend to be far friendlier to off-grid setups than traditional transformer models.

@AGM_Geek @FrankReid is on the right track but worth adding — the Multiplus has a configurable PowerAssist threshold and also an overload trip delay. Worth checking your inverter's assistCurrentLimit setting in VEConfigure if you haven't already.

Also, what's your DC cable run like between the batteries and the Multiplus? Even a fraction of an ohm of extra resistance causes the voltage to sag horribly under that inrush spike, which can trigger a low-voltage shutdown rather than a true overload condition. Had this exact issue on my narrowboat — looked like an inverter fault but was actually a slightly loose busbar connection.

What size Multiplus are you running? The 1600VA and 2000VA models are noticeably less tolerant of spiky loads than the 3000VA in my experience.

Many people set this conservatively to protect their generator or shore power supply, then wonder why their 700W microwave apparently needs the power of a small nuclear reactor to heat a

Great thread, everyone's covered the main culprits well. One thing I'd add that often gets overlooked — check your battery cable sizing and connections before diving too deep into software settings. I've seen Multiplus units throw low voltage faults during microwave startup simply because undersized cables (or a loose terminal) were causing enough voltage drop to fool the inverter into thinking the battery bank itself was struggling. Worth sticking a multimeter directly across your battery terminals while the microwave kicks in — if you're seeing more than about 0.5V difference between there and the inverter terminals, your cabling is adding to the problem. Sorted a mate's setup last year with nothing more than a terminal clean and upsizing from 35mm² to 50mm² cable. Sometimes the fix is cheaper than you'd expect!
