Victron Multiplus tripping out when the washing machine hits its spin cycle

Had this exact issue last summer with my Multiplus 12/3000. The spin cycle creates a massive inrush current spike that the inverter sees as an overload, even if your steady-state draw is well within spec.

Few things worth checking:

Battery side first — what's your bank size and cable gauge? If the cables are undersized or connections are even slightly corroded, internal resistance climbs and voltage sags hard under that spike. The Multiplus will trip on low voltage before it ever trips on true overload. My setup runs 2/0 AWG (roughly 70mm²) all the way to a 300Ah LiFePO4 Fogstar bank and it still occasionally grumbles.

Check your VEConfigure settings — specifically the AC output current limit and the dynamic current limiter. There's an option to enable the dynamic current limiter which helps smooth out motor startup loads. Made a noticeable difference for me.

Overload trip delay — you can tweak this in VEConfigure too. Extending it slightly gives the inverter a bit more tolerance for brief spikes without nuking everything.

Worth also looking at whether your washing machine has an ECO or low-spin mode. Dropping from 1400rpm to 1000rpm cuts the peak draw considerably. Not ideal, clothes come out wetter, but it's a reasonable compromise off-grid.

What size Multiplus are you running and what's your battery setup? That'll help narrow it down — if you're on a 12v system especially, the current numbers get brutal very quickly on high-draw appliances.

@OffGridDoug good shout raising this. One thing worth checking that doesn't get mentioned enough - have a look at your battery cable resistance. Even if your Multiplus is perfectly healthy, high-resistance connections between the battery and inverter will cause the voltage to sag catastrophically during that inrush spike, which triggers the low voltage cutoff rather than a true overload fault.

Crimp quality and cable length matter enormously here. I dropped from 2 metres to 1.2 metres of 70mm² cable on mine and it made a noticeable difference to how the inverter handled sudden loads. Worth checking your terminal connections are properly torqued too - a slightly loose lug can have surprisingly high resistance.

What does VictronConnect show as your minimum voltage during the trip? That'll tell you straight away whether it's voltage sag or genuine overload.

Good timing on this thread — had the exact same nightmare with my shepherd's hut setup last winter.

What sorted it for me was digging into the VEConfigure settings and bumping up the UPS function and tweaking the AC low disconnect threshold. Also worth checking your battery cable lengths and connections — I had a slightly loose terminal that was making the voltage sag catastrophically the moment any serious load hit.

One thing neither @OffGridDoug nor @WattTony has mentioned — the Multiplus transfer switch settings. There's an "assistants" option in VEConfigure where you can set an ignore AC input delay that can smooth out how the unit responds to sudden load spikes.

Also, Fogstar Drift cells? Mine handled spin cycles much better once I upgraded from AGM — internal resistance is so much lower the voltage doesn't crater the same way.

Ah, the spin cycle of doom — narrowboat owners know this one well. Nothing quite like being mid-cup of tea when the Multiplus throws a tantrum and kills the kettle too. Brilliant timing, inverter.

The bit nobody mentions: the Multiplus has a PowerAssist feature that can supplement your inverter's output using a secondary AC source during those spike moments — worth exploring if you've got a small genny or hookup occasionally available.

But purely off-grid? Go into VEConfigure and dig into the overload trip delay settings. The default is quite aggressive. Nudging the response curve gives the inverter a breath before it panics about instantaneous spikes.

Also — and I'm sceptical whenever people skip this step — check your DC cable sizing and connection resistance. A marginal connection under LiFePO4 at high discharge rates causes a voltage sag that looks like an overload to the Multiplus when it absolutely isn't one. Foxed me for weeks on my motorhome build before I found a slightly loose busbar connection doing exactly this.

Worth adding — the transfer switch delay is often the hidden culprit here. If you've got any shore power or generator input connected, even occasionally, check your ESS or PowerControl settings in VictronConnect. A misconfigured input current limit can cause the Multiplus to throttle itself precisely when the motor ramps up.

Also ran into this in my van conversion with a Miele compact washer. Solved it partly by setting the inverter overload trip delay to its maximum value in the GX settings — gives the unit a fraction longer to ride through the spike rather than immediately shutting down.

@LiFePO4Nerd is right about PowerAssist, but it only helps if your battery's internal resistance is low enough to deliver that burst current cleanly. Worth checking your Fogstar or whatever cells you're running with a proper discharge test under load before assuming the inverter's at fault.
