Victron MultiPlus tripping out when the washing machine kicks into spin cycle

Had this exact issue in my garden office setup last year. Nightmare.

Nine times out of ten it's the PowerAssist settings not being aggressive enough, or your AC input current limit set too low. The MultiPlus sees that surge from the motor spinning up and just panics.

Few things worth checking:

  • What size MultiPlus are you running? The 1600VA will struggle more than the 2400 or 3000
  • Check your overload trip threshold in VE.Config — mine was set way too conservatively from factory
  • PowerAssist — is it actually enabled? And what's your assist ramp rate set to?

Also worth looking at whether it's a weak battery issue rather than the inverter itself. If your voltage dips hard under that surge load, the MultiPlus will interpret that as a fault. What batteries are you on?

I ended up sorting mine by bumping the AC input limit up slightly and tweaking the PowerAssist ramp. Took about 20 mins with a laptop and the VE.Config software, completely free fix.

If you haven't already, grab a Victron SmartShunt or at least hook up to VRM so you can actually see what's happening at the moment it trips. Flying blind otherwise.

What's your full setup? Might be able to narrow it down if we know panel size, battery capacity, that sort of thing. Others here will have more specific numbers than me I imagine.

@PeakVanLifer yeah had this on my static when I first set it up — drove me absolutely mental for weeks.

Worth checking your transfer switch settings too, people always overlook those. Also the UPS function — if that's enabled it can cause weird behaviour during big inductive loads like washing machine motors.

My fix in the end was bumping the AC input current limit up and tweaking the weak AC setting in VE.Configure. The spin cycle surge is brutal, motors are horrible for that initial inrush.

If you're running a MultiPlus-II check your ESS assistant settings as well — sometimes the assistant is fighting itself trying to manage the grid input during that surge.

What's your battery bank? Low voltage sag can also trigger the overload protection before PowerAssist even has a chance to kick in properly.

The spin cycle surge is a classic — took me three weekends of head-scratching at my static before I cracked it.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: check your battery cable gauge and connection quality before you start fiddling with VE.Configure settings. My Pylontech US3000s were perfectly capable but a slightly dodgy negative terminal was causing enough voltage sag during that inrush spike to trigger the overload protection before PowerAssist could even respond.

Tightened everything up with a proper torque wrench, re-did the connections with quality lugs, and the MultiPlus stopped complaining almost immediately.

Software settings matter, but if the physical side isn't solid, you're chasing ghosts in the config screens. Start at the cables, then work your way up to the settings.

Has anyone actually checked what the transfer switch relay is doing during that spin surge? On my boat the MultiPlus was tripping because the relay couldn't keep up with the load transition fast enough — nothing to do with PowerAssist at all.

Worth logging it properly with VictronConnect before randomly tweaking settings. You can see exactly what's happening at the moment of trip — overload, low battery, or something else entirely. Half the threads I've seen on this end up with people chasing the wrong fault.

What's your battery bank? If it's undersized or the BMS is cutting out under surge current, no amount of fiddling with the MultiPlus settings will fix it.

@BayTim raises a good point about the transfer switch, but I'd also look closely at your AC Input Current Limit in VE.Config — specifically whether PowerAssist is actually enabled at all. It's buried under the General tab and defaults to off on some firmware versions.

On my shepherd's hut setup I had the spin surge tripping the unit repeatedly until I set the input limit to 10A and let PowerAssist boost from the battery to cover the inrush. The key figure to nail down is your washing machine's actual locked rotor current — stick a clamp meter on the supply cable during that spin-up moment. Mine was pulling nearly 14A for about 800ms.

Also worth checking: is your battery bank's max continuous discharge current sufficient to cover that burst? Fogstar Drift cells have a decent C-rate but undersized BMS settings will throttle you right when you need it.
