Victron Orion 30A cutting out after 20 mins on the motorway - anyone else had this?

Had this exact issue last year with my shepherd's hut build. Turns out mine was a thermal shutdown — the unit was mounted inside a small cabinet with basically zero airflow. Moved it to an external position with a bit of breathing room and it's been solid ever since.

The Orion 30A does run warm, especially on longer runs. Victron's own docs say it needs decent ventilation but it's easy to underestimate how much.

Few things worth checking:

  • Mounting position — flat against a surface with no gap is a recipe for overheating
  • Input voltage — if your alternator voltage is dropping under load, it can trigger a shutdown
  • Firmware — older units had some quirks, worth connecting to VictronConnect and checking

Is yours the isolated or non-isolated version? The isolated tends to run hotter in my experience.

Also worth looking at the history tab in VictronConnect — it'll show you if it's logging low voltage or high temp events. That'll tell you which way to go pretty quickly without just guessing.

Anyone else got thoughts on this? Curious whether it's a common batch issue or just a ventilation thing across the board.

@Lefty mine did the same thing in the shepherd's hut — I'd mounted it behind a panel like an absolute muppet and wondered why it kept throwing a strop at the 20-minute mark like clockwork. Victron's thermal protection is extremely conscientious, let's say that.

Worth checking the input voltage too though — if your alternator voltage dips below the threshold while the engine's under load on a motorway, the Orion-TR Smart will just quietly give up on life. Stick the VictronConnect app on and check the history graph, it'll tell you exactly whether it's thermal or undervoltage causing the cutout. Saves a lot of guesswork.

Worth adding — if it's cutting out specifically on the motorway rather than around town, that points strongly to the alternator voltage behaviour rather than thermals alone. Modern smart alternators (especially VAG group engines) drop voltage significantly under load at speed, which can trigger the Orion's input undervoltage protection.

Worth checking what your alternator is actually putting out with a voltmeter when cruising. If it's dipping below 13.2V the Orion will cut. A lot of people solve this by enabling the "engine running detection" correctly in VictronConnect — there's an input voltage threshold setting that sometimes needs adjusting to match your vehicle's actual alternator profile.

I had similar weirdness charging from my van on the motorway before I sorted the detection settings. Not saying thermals aren't a factor too, but the timing detail suggests voltage might be the culprit here.

@NQ_Sparks makes a good point about the alternator angle — worth checking whether your vehicle has a smart alternator (most post-2015 cars do). The Orion-Tr Smart non-isolated has an input voltage threshold, and smart alternators often drop to ~13V or below during cruise to save fuel, which can trigger the Orion's low-voltage cutoff.

In the VictronConnect app, check your input voltage lockout settings under the charger parameters. The default is sometimes set higher than ideal for smart alternator vehicles.

I had similar confusion when planning EV charging integration for my static — different scenario, but the same lesson: always log the actual input voltage under real load conditions before assuming it's thermal. A cheap Bluetooth battery monitor on the starter battery will show you exactly what's happening during that 20-minute window.

@NQ_Sparks and @BlownFuse have covered the smart alternator angle well — just want to add that if you've already ruled that out, double-check your input voltage settings on the Victron app.

Mine on the boat was shutting down because the input voltage threshold was set slightly too high — so any small dip from the alternator under load triggered a cutout. Easy fix once you know where to look.

Also worth checking the cable runs — long thin cables on the input side will cause voltage drop which mimics the same symptoms. Victron recommends proper sizing and it's easy to underestimate on a longer run.

What gauge cable did you use and how long is the run from the starter battery?
