Victron Orion 30A keeping cutting out on long drives - anyone else had this?

Mine did exactly this on the canal last summer — turned out the Victron Orion 30A was going into thermal shutdown because some genius (me) had mounted it in a cupboard with zero airflow.

Slapped it on an aluminium plate bolted to the engine bay bulkhead instead and haven't had a peep out of it since.

A few things worth checking:

  • Ambient temp — these units derate heavily above 40°C, and engine bays get toasty
  • Input voltage drop — if your alternator cables are undersized, the Orion sees a sag under load and throws a wobble
  • VictronConnect app — plug in via Bluetooth and check the history tab, it logs exactly why it shut down (thermal, low input, etc.)

The history log is genuinely the first thing I'd look at before touching anything physical — saves a lot of head-scratching.

Also worth asking: is it a fixed or isolated variant? The isolated ones seem to run a touch warmer in my experience, though that might just be confirmation bias on my part.

What's your install setup like — vehicle type, cable runs, where you've mounted it? Someone on here will have had the same issue, this forum's seen more Orion gremlins than Victron probably care to admit. 😄

@Stu1991 Classic installation gotcha — thermal shutdown on the Orion-Tr Smart is quite aggressive by design, kicks in around 40°C ambient if I recall correctly.

On my narrowboat I've got mine mounted vertically on an exterior-facing bulkhead with 50mm clearance all round. Made a noticeable difference versus the original horizontal position inside a locker.

Worth checking a few other causes beyond airflow though:

  • Input voltage sag — if your starter battery drops below ~11.5V under load, the Orion will cut out entirely
  • Cable sizing — undersized runs create resistance-based voltage drop that mimics a weak battery
  • VE.Direct monitoring — connect it to the Victron Connect app and check the error history, it logs exactly why it shut down

The error codes distinguish between thermal and undervoltage events, so you're not guessing. Pull those logs before assuming it's purely a heat issue.

@Stu1991 worth double-checking your alternator sense wire too — I had similar cutouts on my van conversion and it turned out the Orion wasn't properly detecting engine-on state, so it was cycling on/off trying to protect the starter battery rather than actually overheating.

Quick question for anyone who knows: is there a minimum cable run length or gauge recommendation between the starter battery and the Orion 30A? I'm planning an install in my shepherd's hut tow vehicle and the mounting position means I'd have a fairly short, direct run — wondering if that causes any issues with voltage sensing accuracy.

Also — does the Victron Connect app show you the actual unit temperature in real time, or just log the shutdown events after the fact?

@Stu1991 worth noting the Orion-Tr Smart also has an input voltage threshold — if your alternator isn't pushing above ~13.2V when the engine's under load, the Orion simply won't engage. Long motorway runs are usually fine but slow urban driving with heating/lights pulling the voltage down can trigger it repeatedly.

Check the VictronConnect app history — it logs the reason for each shutdown so you're not just guessing. Thermal and low input voltage show up differently.

Had something similar on my static setup where I was using it as a buffer charge source; turned out the input cable was slightly undersized for the 30A draw which was causing a voltage drop right at the unit's terminals. Worth measuring there specifically, not just at the battery.

Had the same thermal issue in my motorhome — mounting location is everything with these units.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: check your input cable sizing. I was running mine on undersized cable and getting enough voltage drop under load that it was borderline triggering the low voltage cutoff, then recovering, repeat. Looked exactly like thermal shutdown but wasn't.

Ran proper 6mm² cable all the way back to the battery and it sorted it completely. The Orion is quite sensitive to any instability on the input side.

Worth ruling out before you start pulling it off the wall again @Stu1991.
