Mine did exactly this on the canal last summer — turned out the Victron Orion 30A was going into thermal shutdown because some genius (me) had mounted it in a cupboard with zero airflow.
Slapped it on an aluminium plate bolted to the engine bay bulkhead instead and haven't had a peep out of it since.
A few things worth checking:
- Ambient temp — these units derate heavily above 40°C, and engine bays get toasty
- Input voltage drop — if your alternator cables are undersized, the Orion sees a sag under load and throws a wobble
- VictronConnect app — plug in via Bluetooth and check the history tab, it logs exactly why it shut down (thermal, low input, etc.)
The history log is genuinely the first thing I'd look at before touching anything physical — saves a lot of head-scratching.
Also worth asking: is it a fixed or isolated variant? The isolated ones seem to run a touch warmer in my experience, though that might just be confirmation bias on my part.
What's your install setup like — vehicle type, cable runs, where you've mounted it? Someone on here will have had the same issue, this forum's seen more Orion gremlins than Victron probably care to admit. 😄
