Victron Orion 30A keeping cutting out on long drives — anyone else had this?

Had this exact issue last year with my Orion-Tr Smart 30A. Turned out to be a combination of two things working against each other.

First suspect — engine battery voltage drop. On long motorway runs the alternator is doing a lot, and if your starter battery voltage dips even briefly below the Orion's input threshold (usually around 11.5V by default), it'll shut off. Check your input voltage settings in the VictronConnect app and consider dropping the "start" threshold slightly if your alternator is a bit lazy under load.

Second and more likely culprit — heat. The Orion 30A thermal throttles and eventually shuts down if airflow is poor. Where have you mounted it? Mine was tucked behind a panel with basically no ventilation and it was cutting out after about 45 minutes every time. Moved it to a proper vented location and the problem disappeared completely. Victron's own guidance says keep it away from enclosed spaces, but the manual doesn't exactly shout about it.

A few things worth checking:

  • Firmware up to date via VictronConnect?
  • Input and output wiring gauge — undersized cable causes voltage drop that triggers shutdown
  • Are you running engine detection mode or a dedicated ignition wire? Engine detection can sometimes misfire on modern vehicles with smart alternators

Also worth enabling the history/data logging in the app so you can see exactly what voltage and temperature readings look like at the point of cutout. That'll tell you definitively which fault is triggering it.

What vehicle and alternator setup are you running? Smart alternator changes things considerably — might need a Orion with the dedicated "non-isolated" variant depending on your vehicle.

@DodgyRoamer interesting you mention voltage drop — I had something similar on my cabin build and traced it to the cable run being underspec'd for the distance involved.

Worth checking:

  • Cable gauge — a 30A draw over a long run needs beefy cable, 6mm² minimum, ideally 10mm² if your alternator-to-Orion distance is significant
  • Voltage threshold settings in the VictronConnect app — mine was set too conservatively and kept seeing the starter battery as "low" during high-draw moments

The Orion-Tr Smart has adjustable input voltage lockout. If it's cutting out repeatedly, it may simply be protecting itself correctly but your threshold is too tight for your vehicle's actual charging profile.

What's your cable run length and what gauge are you currently on?

Classic Orion-Tr paranoia — it's just doing its job protecting your starter battery, but the timing feels personal 😄

Worth checking your input undervoltage lockout setting in the VictronConnect app — if your alternator voltage dips during heavy load (aircon, headlights, etc.) the Orion will shut off thinking the engine's not running.

Two things I'd look at:

  • Crank detection threshold — bump it down slightly if your alternator's a bit anaemic on motorways
  • Restart voltage — make sure it's set sensibly so it doesn't cycle repeatedly

Also @Inverter_Pro is right about cabling — I run 6mm² minimum on my motorhome installation and even that got warm before I sorted a proper fused connection closer to the starter battery. Voltage drop on cheap thin cable will absolutely trigger shutdowns.

@DodgyRoamer this rings a bell from my boat install. The detail people miss is the input voltage lockout hysteresis — the Orion won't restart until the input climbs back above the reconnect threshold, which is separate from the disconnect point. If your alternator is marginal under load (heating, nav systems, etc.), you can end up in a cycle where it barely recovers enough to trigger reconnection before dropping again.

On the shepherds hut van I wired mine with a dedicated feed direct to the battery terminals rather than tapping the fusebox — killed the nuisance trips overnight. Proper 6mm² cable matters too, @Inverter_Pro is onto something there.

Worth checking your Victron Connect logs as well — the Orion records input voltage history, so you can see exactly what it was doing when it tripped rather than guessing.

@ExFirefighter11 what's the actual hysteresis value on those lockout thresholds? I can never find it clearly documented in the Victron manuals — or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.

Also wondering — does the input undervoltage lockout setting in the VictronConnect app actually help here, or is it more of a separate protection layer? Got a static caravan setup with a Fogstar Drift 100Ah as my leisure bank and I'm trying to understand whether tweaking that setting would stop my Orion dropping out on longer runs before I start messing with things I shouldn't.

Is this something you can sort via the app alone or does it need a proper rewire of the input cabling first?
