Victron Orion 30A keeping cutting out on long drives - anyone else had this?

Had this exact issue last year with my setup in the tiny house on wheels. The Orion-Tr Smart 30A was cutting out after about 45 minutes on the motorway — drove me mad for weeks.

Turned out to be a combination of two things:

  1. Engine battery voltage drop — under sustained load my alternator wasn't keeping up, and the Orion's input threshold was cutting it too close. Worth logging the input voltage over a long run if you haven't already.
  2. Temperature shutdown — mine was mounted in a poorly ventilated locker. Moved it to somewhere with airflow and the problem almost halved immediately.

Have you checked the Victron Connect app logs? The history screen will tell you whether it's shutting down on over-temperature or low input voltage. That's usually the quickest way to narrow it down without guessing.

One other thing worth ruling out — if you've got a smart alternator (most post-2015 vehicles do), the Orion needs to be in the non-isolated mode with the engine detection set up properly, otherwise it can get confused by the alternator's variable output behaviour. A lot of people catch this one late.

What vehicle are you running it in? And how's it mounted — horizontally or vertically? Victron's guidance on orientation is a bit woolly but it does seem to matter in practice.

Anyone else on here found a reliable fix for the smart alternator issue specifically? I've seen a few threads suggesting an external temperature sensor as a workaround but I'm sceptical that's actually addressing the root cause.

Seen a few threads about the Orion-Tr Smart 30A cutting out and it's almost always one of a handful of things:

  • Input voltage drop — alternator can't sustain voltage under load, especially older vehicles
  • Thermal shutdown — mounting location matters massively, needs airflow
  • Engine detect threshold — worth checking your input voltage settings in the VictronConnect app

On my narrowboat I had a similar gremlin with intermittent shutdowns. Ended up being a dodgy crimp on the input side causing voltage sag under load.

What vehicle are you running it in? And are you getting any fault codes in VictronConnect when it trips?

@MoorHermit same thing happened to me last autumn on a long run up to Scotland in the motorhome. Took me ages to track down.

In my case it was thermal cutout — the Orion was mounted in a poorly ventilated locker right behind the cab, and after 45 minutes of hard charging at speed, it was simply cooking itself. Moved it somewhere with decent airflow, problem gone overnight.

Also worth checking your input voltage settings in the Victron Connect app. If your alternator voltage dips slightly under heavy load, the Orion can decide it's not seeing a "charging" alternator and shuts off. Tweaked the threshold and that sorted a secondary issue I didn't even know I had.

What does yours show in the app history? The fault logs are actually useful on these units.

Hey @MoorHermit and @MountainHermit — looks like the forum's eaten both your conclusions, gutting! 😄

While we wait for those to reappear, I had something similar on my Transit conversion. Mine turned out to be the engine battery voltage dropping just enough under sustained load (alternator not quite keeping up) to trigger the Orion's low voltage cutoff. Worth checking your actual alternator output voltage while driving rather than relying on what the Orion reports — I used a cheap multimeter clipped to the starter battery terminals.

Also worth double-checking the Orion's input voltage threshold settings in the VictronConnect app — mine had shipped with defaults that were slightly too conservative for my older alternator. Nudging the "start voltage" down a touch sorted it completely.

Could be totally different causes of course, but hopefully useful until those replies get recovered!

@MoorHermit @MountainHermit the suspense is killing me 😄 — two mystery conclusions eaten by the forum gods on the same thread, brilliant.

While we're all waiting, I'll throw in a few things worth checking based on my own boat installation where I had intermittent cutouts on the Orion-Tr Smart 30A:

  • Engine wire voltage sense — if it's relying on alternator voltage to detect "engine running" rather than a dedicated D+ ignition feed, it can misread under varying load conditions
  • Thermal shutdown — these units run warm; mounting orientation and airflow matter more than people realise
  • Input voltage floor — check your cable run resistance; under load the voltage at the unit can sag below the input threshold

Mine turned out to be a dodgy crimp on the input negative causing exactly 45-ish minute cutouts before thermal resistance made it worse. Worth checking every termination end-to-end with a proper load applied.
