Victron Orion 30A keeping dropping out on long drives — anyone else had this?

Had something very similar with my Orion 30A last winter. Mine was cutting out after about 45 minutes on the motorway, which was baffling because short runs were absolutely fine.

Turned out to be a thermal issue — the unit was mounted inside a cupboard with practically no airflow. Once I relocated it to a spot with decent ventilation it settled right down. Worth checking whether yours is getting hot to the touch when it drops out.

A few other things worth looking at:

  • Input voltage threshold — are you sure your alternator voltage is staying consistently above the startup threshold on long runs? Some modern smart alternators back off once the starter battery reads full
  • Wiring — loose crimps or undersized cable can cause enough voltage drop to trigger a shutdown, especially under sustained load
  • Firmware — have you updated via VictronConnect recently? There were some quirks in earlier versions

What vehicle are you running it in? Euro 6 engines with variable voltage alternators can be a nightmare with DC-DC chargers generally. I had a mate with a Transit who had no end of grief until he added a battery-to-battery isolator as a workaround.

Also worth enabling the engine detection setting properly if you haven't — sometimes it's misconfigured and the unit thinks the engine has stopped.

Has anyone else run into this specifically on longer journeys rather than short hops? Curious whether it's more widespread than I thought, particularly with newer van setups.

That said, the 45-minute motorway cutout pattern is a classic thermal throttle signature on the Orion-Tr Smart. Mine did exactly this last summer in the garden office van run. The unit gets heat-soaked gradually, hits its internal temp limit, and shuts down gracefully rather than cooking itself.

Worth checking:

  • Mounting orientation — Victron spec flat against a surface for heat dissipation, not hanging in mid-air
  • Ambient temperature in the mounting location — engine bays are brutal
  • VictronConnect logs — the app records shutdown reason if you catch it quickly after a cutout

Mine sorted itself once I added a small 12V fan blowing across the heatsink fins. Bodgy but effective. Proper solution would be remounting somewhere with better airflow.

Classic symptoms though — fine on short runs, dies after 45 mins. Nine times out of ten that's thermal shutdown. The Orion 30A runs warm at full chat and if it's tucked in a cupboard with sod all airflow it'll cook itself.

Had exactly this on my narrowboat. Shoved mine behind the bow locker with no ventilation like a muppet. Moved it somewhere with actual airflow and job done.

Few things worth checking:

  • Mounting surface — ally plate conducts heat away nicely
  • Ambient temp in the enclosure after 45 mins (you'd be surprised)
  • Input voltage drooping under load on a long run

Also worth logging it via VictronConnect — the history tab'll tell you if it's throwing under/overvoltage faults rather than thermal ones.

Had the exact same dropout pattern on my narrowboat last summer — Orion 30A, fine for half hour then gone. Mine was a loose negative on the starter battery side. Vibration on the cut would gradually work it loose enough to trigger undervoltage protection but it'd reseat itself when you stopped and things cooled/settled. Looked totally fine visually.

Worth checking:

  • All terminals both ends, not just the Orion itself
  • Inline fuse holder — those cheap blade fuse holders are notorious for high resistance when warm
  • Alternator voltage actually reaching the Orion input — stick a meter on it while driving if you can

Victron Connect app will show you the fault history if you've got bluetooth on yours, that'll tell you whether it's seeing undervoltage, overvoltage or thermal shutdown.

Worth adding to what's been hinted at: on my narrowboat I found the input voltage threshold was the silent culprit. After 45-60 mins the alternator voltage would sag slightly under load, and the Orion's low-voltage cutoff would trip it.

Quick checks worth doing:

  • Log input voltage with a Victron SmartShunt or even a cheap Bluetooth meter
  • Check your cable run length — voltage drop on longer boats adds up fast
  • Victron Connect app will show you the actual cutoff event in history

Mine sorted itself once I tweaked the input lockout threshold down a notch in the settings. Dead simple fix once you know where to look.
