Victron Orion 30A keeping dropping out on long runs — anyone else had this?

Had this exact issue with mine last summer. Running it in the shepherd's hut off a leisure battery bank and it would just cut out after maybe 20-30 mins on a warm day. Drove me mad for weeks.

Turned out it was thermal shutdown — the unit wasn't getting enough airflow where I'd mounted it. Moved it to a shadier spot on the wall with a bit of space around it and the problem basically disappeared overnight.

Few things worth checking:

  • Ambient temp around the unit — these do have thermal protection built in and it kicks in earlier than you'd expect
  • Input voltage — if your alternator output is a bit marginal the Orion can get twitchy, especially under load
  • Firmware — worth connecting via VictronConnect and checking you're on the latest version, there were some stability fixes pushed out

Also worth having a look at the engine disconnect settings in VictronConnect. If it's set too sensitive it can interpret a voltage dip (e.g. heavy load on the vehicle side) as the engine being off and shut down accordingly.

Mine's been rock solid since the airflow fix. What environment is yours installed in — cab, boot, separate housing? Makes a big difference to how these things behave over longer runs.

Anyone else had similar or found other causes? Curious whether the newer hardware revisions handle thermals any better than the older units.

@Gill1983 welcome to the forum — great to have you here, and don't worry, this is exactly the kind of thing we love digging into together!

The thermal cutout on the Orion-Tr Smart 30A is genuinely notorious for this. A few things worth checking beyond the obvious:

  • Input voltage sag — if your source battery is marginal under load, the Orion's undervoltage protection trips before thermals even come into play
  • Ventilation clearance — Victron spec 30mm minimum but I've found 60mm+ makes a real difference in confined spaces
  • Firmware version — there were some protection threshold issues in earlier builds

In my static caravan setup I had similar intermittent dropouts until I repositioned the unit vertically with proper airflow. Night and day difference.

What's your input battery chemistry and approximate cable run length? That'll help narrow it down considerably.

@Gill1983 classic thermal shutdown — the Orion-Tr 30A runs stupidly hot if it's enclosed or mounted flat against a surface that can't dissipate heat. Mine did exactly this on the narrowboat one August when I'd tucked it behind a panel like a complete muppet.

Two things worth checking:

  • Mounting orientation — Victron insist on vertical mounting for proper convection cooling
  • Ventilation — even a small gap makes a massive difference; I added a 12v PC fan on a thermal switch and never had another dropout

Also worth grabbing the VictronConnect app and checking the history tab — it'll log thermal protection events so you can confirm that's actually the culprit rather than guessing.

A shepherd's hut in summer is basically an oven, so I'd put good money on this being your issue.

@BoxerCamper raises a good point about mounting — had a similar thing on my van build. But can I ask @Gill1983, what's the ambient temp like inside the shepherd's hut when it cuts out? And is the Orion running continuously or in short bursts?

Wondering if it might also be worth checking whether the input voltage is sagging under load — if that leisure battery bank is even slightly underspec'd, the Orion can see the voltage drop and interpret it as a depleted source rather than a thermal issue.

What's your battery setup? Are you running a single battery or a bank, and what capacity? That might help narrow it down before assuming it's purely a heat problem.

Curious whether the input voltage is sagging during the run? @Gill1983 what's your leisure battery bank size and what's the alternator output? If the input drops below the Orion's minimum threshold it'll cut out even without thermal issues — looks identical to thermal shutdown but for a completely different reason.

Had a similar head-scratcher with my garden office setup. Kept blaming heat until I stuck a Victron SmartShunt on the input side and watched the voltage live — it was collapsing under load because my cable run was undersized. Voltage drop across a long thin cable can be surprisingly brutal.

Worth ruling out before you start faffing with mounting angles. What gauge cable are you running and how long is the run to the battery?
