Been running a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 30A isolated for about six months now and I'm seeing the same thing. Works brilliantly around town and on shorter A-road trips, but anything over about 45 minutes on the motorway and it seems to throttle back or cut out entirely before the leisure battery is anywhere near full.
My setup is a 200Ah Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 as the leisure bank, charged off the van's standard alternator. I think what's happening is the alternator is getting hot under sustained high-current demand and the voltage starts dropping, which confuses the Orion into thinking the engine has stopped — but I'm not certain.
A few things I'm wondering:
- Is there a way to adjust the input voltage threshold in VictronConnect so it doesn't cut out prematurely?
- Would fitting a battery-to-battery charger with a lower minimum input voltage threshold help, or is this fundamentally an alternator capacity issue?
- Has anyone fitted an alternator temp sensor to actually confirm this is heat-related rather than just guessing?
I've read about people fitting a secondary 140A alternator on certain van conversions but that feels like a significant job. Also seen some mention of using a DC-DC charger with a lower charge current setting to reduce alternator load — would dropping the Orion to 20A make a meaningful difference to the cut-out behaviour?
Would be interested to know if others with Euro 6 vans are seeing this more than older models, as I understand the smart alternators behave differently.
