Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out after 20 mins - anyone else had this?

Had this exact issue on my boat last summer. Turned out to be thermal cutout — the Orion was mounted flat against a wooden bulkhead with basically no airflow. Moved it to a vertical mount with a bit of space around it and the problem vanished.

Worth checking a few things:

  • Ambient temp around the unit when it cuts out
  • Input voltage — if your alternator voltage is dropping the Orion can get confused
  • Firmware — mine was on an old version, updated via VictronConnect and it did seem more stable after

The 20-minute thing is a classic thermal pattern tbh. Gets warm, hits the limit, shuts off, cools down, restarts. Rinse and repeat.

What's your input source — alternator or another battery? And is it the isolated or non-isolated version? I've only got experience with the isolated one on the boat but I know the non-isolated can be a bit fussier about voltage differentials.

Also how's it mounted? Horizontal flat mount is apparently not ideal according to the Victron docs, though I'll be honest I only read that after I'd already had the problem 🙄

Anyone else had similar with the 30A specifically? Curious whether this is more common than it seems.

@Fogstar_Fan worth also checking your alternator output voltage under load — if it's dropping below the Orion's input threshold (typically 13.2V for a 12V system), it'll shut down and look exactly like thermal cutout but it's actually undervoltage protection triggering.

Had this on my Ducato conversion. Fiat's smart alternator does all sorts of odd things under heavy draw, and the Orion-TR Smart was cutting out every time the alternator management system backed off the charge voltage. Solved it by checking live data through the VictronConnect app — the history screen shows exactly why it tripped each time, which is invaluable for diagnosis.

So before repositioning the unit, plug into VictronConnect and check the fault history. Could save you pulling the installation apart unnecessarily.

Really useful thread this. Quick question for the group — has anyone actually measured the temperature of the unit when it cuts out? I've got a similar setup in my garden office (Orion-Tr Smart 30A fed from a vehicle) and I'm wondering whether the Victron Connect app's thermal data tells you anything useful after the fact, or whether you'd need something like a cheap IR thermometer on standby.

Also @DucatoSolar — on the alternator voltage point, is there a minimum input threshold the Orion will tolerate before it just gives up entirely? I've seen figures quoted all over the place. Asking because my alternator's getting on a bit and I suspect it's not exactly performing at its best under load.

@VoltPaddy yes, I've done exactly this. Stuck a cheap thermocouple probe on the heatsink of my Orion-TR Smart 30A during a long motorway run. Hit 78°C before it cut out. Victron's spec says thermal shutdown kicks in around 80°C, so that tracks perfectly.

The real fix is treating the Orion like a proper power device — minimum 10cm clearance on all sides, heatsink fins oriented vertically so convection actually works. People keep bolting these to whatever flat surface is convenient and then wonder why they're getting dropouts.

Also worth noting: the Victron Connect app logs temperature if you've got Bluetooth enabled. No need for external probes if you check the history graph after a run. Most people don't even know that data is there.

Had this on my garden office build last year. Worth checking the firmware too — there was a version that had overly aggressive thermal protection thresholds. Updated via VictronConnect and it made a noticeable difference even before I sorted the airflow.

Also @VoltPaddy if you're measuring temps, the Orion will log its own internal temp in VictronConnect history if you've got it on Bluetooth. Saves messing about with thermocouples.

One other thing nobody's mentioned — check your battery negative connection at the Orion itself. A slightly dodgy connection causes resistance, generates heat locally, and can trick the unit into thinking it's running hotter than it is. Caught me out once.
