Had the exact same bother with mine last year. Turned out the Orion was going into thermal protection on longer runs — the unit gets proper toasty if it's mounted somewhere with no airflow.
Few things worth checking:
- Mounting position — is it vertical with decent space around it? Mine was wedged in a cupboard like an idiot and it hated me for it
- Input voltage drop — on long motorway runs the alternator should be keeping up, but if your cable run to the Orion is lengthy or undersized you'll get voltage sag triggering the low-input cutoff
- Smart alternator? — loads of newer motors have variable voltage alternators that confuse DC-DC chargers. The Orion-Tr Smart handles this better than the basic unit but can still wobble
Worth connecting via Bluetooth and watching the live data in VictronConnect while someone else drives. You'll see pretty quickly whether it's thermal, voltage, or something else cutting it.
What vehicle are you running it in? And is it the Tr Smart or the older non-isolated version? Makes a difference to the diagnosis tbh.
Also — how long is your cabling from the starter battery to the Orion, and what cross-section did you use? I've seen people run 6mm² on a 30A unit over a 3 metre run and wonder why it's struggling.
