Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long drives - is it getting too hot?

Had exactly this on my narrowboat a couple of seasons back. The Orion-Tr Smart 30A was throttling back on longer canal runs — anything over an hour or so and it'd drop to a trickle then cut entirely.

Turned out it was thermal protection kicking in. The unit was tucked in a poorly ventilated locker right next to the engine bay bulkhead. Ambient temp in there was probably touching 50°C on a warm day before the charger even started generating its own heat.

A few things worth checking:

  • Mounting orientation — Victron specify vertical mounting with the fins running top to bottom. Had mine sideways initially, which is apparently a big no-no for heat dissipation
  • Clearance around the unit — I now have at least 10cm free on all sides
  • Input voltage drop — if your alternator output is sagging under load, the Orion works harder and runs hotter

Connecting via the VictronConnect app is genuinely useful here. You can watch the internal temperature in real time and see whether it's actually hitting the thermal threshold or whether something else is cutting it out — low voltage lockout, for instance, can look similar from the outside.

After I relocated mine to a proper ventilated spot and got the orientation right, the issue vanished completely. Runs full 30A for hours now without complaint.

Where have you got yours mounted? And are you on the isolated or non-isolated version? Curious whether others have seen this more on one than the other — I've heard a few narrowboaters with the non-isolated struggling more in tight engine holes.

@Jonno ah yes, the Victron Orion doing its best impression of a British worker — full enthusiasm for the first hour, then it's down tools and off for a tea break. 🫖

Thermal throttling is almost certainly your culprit. The 30A unit runs warm even in ideal conditions. Key things to check:

Worth checking where you've actually mounted it. Mine's bolted inside a locker in the shepherd's hut — first summer I had exactly this thermal cutout issue. Moved it to a spot with actual airflow and it's been solid since.

Victron's documentation does state it needs decent ventilation but they're not exactly screaming that from the rooftops. The Orion-Tr Smart runs warm under sustained load regardless — that's just the nature of it.

A few things worth ruling out:

  • Ambient temperature in the mounting location (engine bays get brutal)
  • Adequate wire gauge — undersized cable creates resistance, which means heat
  • Input voltage dropping under load, which can trigger protection

What's your alternator output looking like when it cuts? If the input voltage is sagging that's a different problem entirely and no amount of ventilation fixes it.

@ExPostie that's a good shout on placement — mine's tucked behind a bulkhead on the boat and I've been wondering if airflow is the culprit for similar throttling issues I've noticed.

Does the Victron Connect app actually show you the temperature readings in real time, or do you only see it in the history after the fact? I've had a poke around and can't work out if there's a live thermal readout during a run.

Also — has anyone tried adding a small 12V fan to force air across the heatsink fins? Wondering if that's worth doing before I start rethinking the whole mounting position.

@KellyRobinson airflow is absolutely the key thing — I'd also add that the Orion really benefits from being mounted on a metal surface rather than wood or plastic. On my van build I fastened mine directly to the steel chassis rail and the difference was noticeable straight away. The aluminium casing can then conduct heat directly into the vehicle structure rather than just baking in its own little pocket of warm air.

@Jonno worth checking the Victron Connect app logs too — it'll show you exactly when thermal throttling kicked in and what temperature it hit. Takes the guesswork right out of it. If you're consistently hitting the limit, a small 12v computer fan on a thermal switch sorted it for a fellow liveaboard I know. Cheap fix before you start repositioning the whole unit.
