Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long drives — is it overheating?

Had the exact same issue with mine last summer. Turned out it was thermal shutdown — the unit was mounted inside a plastic storage box with zero airflow. Moved it to an exposed bracket on the van wall and the problem basically vanished.

A few things worth checking:

  • Ambient temp around the unit — Victron's rated operating range tops out at 40°C, and engine bays/confined spaces can easily exceed that on a warm day
  • Input voltage — if your alternator output is dropping under load, the Orion can behave oddly. Worth logging with a MPPT or a cheap Bluetooth shunt to see what's happening in real time
  • Firmware — had a mate with a similar unit on an older firmware that was cutting out prematurely. Victron Connect update sorted it

For my garden office setup I've got the Orion hardwired and it's been rock solid, but that's obviously not moving around or seeing engine heat. Van installs are a different beast entirely.

One thing people overlook is whether it's actually the Orion shutting down or the engine management system reducing alternator output. Some newer vehicles (Ford Transit is a classic offender) do all sorts of clever stuff with alternator load management that can confuse DC-DC chargers.

What vehicle are you running it in? And is it the isolated or non-isolated version? Makes a difference to how you'd go about diagnosing it.

Worth posting your Victron Connect logs if you've got them — someone here will likely spot the pattern straight away.

@BerlingoSolar that's useful to know about the thermal shutdown. Quick question — does the Orion actually log when it's triggered, or do you only find out after the fact when it's already cut out?

I've got mine mounted on a wooden panel in my motorhome with a bit of space around it, but I'm wondering if I should be checking temperatures more proactively. Is anyone using a Victron Cerbo GX to monitor the unit's temperature in real time, or does the Orion not report that data back through VE.Direct?

Also curious whether ambient temperature in the vehicle matters significantly — mine is parked in direct sun most of the time so even "exposed" mounting might not be enough on a hot day.

@BevJackson64 pretty sure it doesn't log thermal events natively, but if you've got a Cerbo GX or even the VictronConnect app open during a drive you'll catch the cutout in real time. I ran mine without any monitoring for ages and was just guessing what was happening tbh.

Worth checking the firmware too — older versions had some quirks with the temp protection thresholds. Mine's on the latest and it's been rock solid since I remounted it with a bit of breathing room.

@OllieThompson73 worth adding that even without a Cerbo, you can catch thermal shutdowns by watching the charger status in VictronConnect — if it's showing "bulk" one minute then drops off entirely with no fault code, thermal protection is usually the culprit.

For my static caravan setup I've got an Orion-Tr Smart 30A mounted vertically on a timber batten with at least 100mm clearance all round. Never had a shutdown. The manual actually specifies minimum clearances — worth double-checking yours meets them before assuming it's a faulty unit.

Also, ambient temperature in the mounting location matters more than people realise. Even indoors, a poorly ventilated cupboard on a warm day can push the unit over its limit fairly quickly under sustained load.

@BlownFuse good shout on the status LED — easy to overlook that. One thing worth adding: if you're running VictronConnect via Bluetooth while driving (passenger can monitor it), you can actually watch the input/output current in real time and spot the moment it cuts out. Gives you a rough idea of how long it's running before thermal shutdown kicks in, which helps diagnose whether it's a marginal airflow issue or something more serious.

Also worth checking the mounting orientation — Victron recommend specific positions for the Orion-Tr Smart and mounting it incorrectly (flat on its back, for instance) restricts heat dissipation even in open air. Had a mate with exactly that problem and simply rotating it 90° solved it completely.

@BoatMatt — on the narrowboat I've got a pair of Orion-Tr Smart 30As mounted to an aluminium backing plate that's bolted directly to the steel hull. Effectively infinite heatsink. Never had a thermal shutdown in three years, including when I'm charging an EV battery pack via a CHAdeMO adapter arrangement.

The point being: the mounting surface itself is doing most of the work, not the ambient airflow around the unit. A lot of people focus on ventilation when the real question is thermal mass and conductivity of whatever the unit is touching.

If yours is on a wooden or plastic surface, you're essentially wrapping it in an insulating blanket regardless of how exposed it looks. Even a small aluminium plate between the Orion and the wall makes a measurable difference — I've logged the temperature data to prove it.
