Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long drives - temperature issue?

Had the exact same drama on my boat last summer — turns out my Orion was wedged between two bits of cabinetry with the ventilation of a very determined thermos flask.

Victron's thermal protection kicks in around 40°C ambient if airflow is restricted, and on a long motorway run your engine bay or wherever you've mounted it is basically a fan oven on the "destroy everything" setting.

Few things worth checking:

  • Mounting orientation — Victron explicitly want it mounted with the fins vertical so heat rises away naturally
  • Clearance — minimum 10cm either side ideally, more if you can manage it
  • Cable sizing — undersized cables create resistance = heat = your Orion having a little lie down at the worst possible moment

If you've got a Victron Connect dongle, pull up the history and check the "high temperature" alarm count — that'll confirm pretty quickly whether thermal shutdown is your culprit rather than something more sinister like a voltage issue on the input side.

Mine sorted itself completely once I relocated it to a spot with actual airflow and added a small 12V fan on a thermostat — total overkill probably, but the thing hasn't hiccuped since.

Where exactly have you got yours mounted? Boat, van, something else? Makes a difference to what solutions are actually practical for you.

@VoltFiona classic "I've installed this in the most thermally hostile environment imaginable and wonder why it's upset" situation — been there myself with my LDV Convoy conversion.

Worth checking the actual shutdown temperature if you have a Victron Connect log — the Orion records thermal events, so you can confirm it's definitely heat and not an input voltage sag triggering protection instead. Both symptoms look identical from the driver's seat.

If it genuinely is thermal, a small 12V fan on a thermostat controller sorted mine completely. Maplin's gone obviously, but a cheap PWM fan controller off Amazon wired to a 40°C thermal probe keeps things ticking over without running the fan constantly.

Also double-check your cable runs aren't adding resistance — voltage drop generates heat at the unit too, compounding the problem.

Worth adding that the Orion-Tr Smart has a pretty conservative thermal threshold compared to some other units — I've seen mine throttle back on warm days even with what I'd consider reasonable airflow.

Victron's app will actually show you the internal temperature in real time if you've got Bluetooth connected, which is genuinely useful for diagnosing exactly when it's cutting back rather than guessing.

For EV charging setups where you're pushing 30A continuously for extended periods, the heat load is significantly higher than occasional top-ups — the unit just never gets a cool-down cycle. Mounting orientation matters too; vertical with the fins running the right direction shifts heat far more efficiently than horizontal.

@VoltFiona had this with my garden office setup — Orion was tucked under a desk with basically no airflow. Moved it to a proper vented enclosure on the wall and the cutouts stopped immediately.

One thing worth checking beyond just airflow — make sure it's mounted on a metal surface if possible. The case is designed to conduct heat into whatever it's bolted to, so a wooden panel is basically useless for dissipation.

Victron's own docs are pretty clear on orientation too — fins vertical, not horizontal.

@VoltFiona this is very relevant to my narrowboat setup — I've got an Orion-Tr Smart 30A tucked into a cratch box locker and I've been wondering if I'm heading for the same fate on longer summer cruises.

Quick question for the thread: does anyone know if the Victron Connect app actually logs the thermal throttling events, or does it just cut out with no trace? I'd love to know whether mine is quietly struggling before it becomes a full shutdown situation.

Also — is there a minimum clearance Victron actually recommends around the unit, or is it just "more is better"? Couldn't find anything specific in the manual beyond the usual vague "ensure adequate ventilation" language.

Had this exact issue in my shepherd's hut build. Mounted the Orion inside a timber cabinet — looked tidy, ran hot, cut out constantly on longer runs.

Ended up cutting a vent slot and fitting a small 12V fan triggered off the ignition circuit. Sorted it completely.

@CopperRoamer cratch boxes are brutal for this — virtually no natural airflow and they trap heat something awful. Worth checking the VictronConnect app too, it logs thermal events so you can see exactly when it's throttling back.
