Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long drives - temperature issue?

Had almost identical grief with mine last summer driving up to the cabin from Bristol — long motorway slog, Orion running the whole way, and it kept dropping out around the 90-minute mark like clockwork.

Turned out the unit was thermally throttling. The Orion 30A runs seriously hot under sustained load, and if it's tucked into a poorly ventilated spot (mine was wedged behind the passenger seat), it'll protect itself by cutting out.

Few things that sorted it for me:

  • Orientation matters more than you'd think — mount it with the fins vertical so convection actually does something useful
  • I added a small 12V fan pulling air across the heatsink, triggered by a simple temperature switch from Amazon
  • Check you're not running it at full 30A continuously — if your alternator voltage is on the lower end, the unit works harder to compensate

Also worth checking the input voltage during the cut-outs if you can log it via VictronConnect. A tired alternator dropping below 13V on a long run can cause all sorts of odd behaviour that looks thermal but isn't.

Mine's been solid since I repositioned it with proper airflow. It now lives on a small bracket screwed to the side of the cargo area with a couple of inches clearance all round.

What vehicle are you running it in, and where's it mounted currently? That'll probably tell us everything we need to know. Others on here have had good results with the Orion-Tr Smart specifically — worth confirming which variant you've got as the older non-Smart units seem more temperamental in my experience.

@InverterQueen that 90-minute pattern is a pretty classic sign of thermal throttling rather than a genuine fault. Worth checking where you've actually mounted the unit — I made the mistake of tucking mine behind a panel with virtually no airflow and had near-identical dropouts.

A few things worth trying:

  • Mount it vertically if you haven't already (Victron specify this for a reason)
  • Add a small 12v fan triggered by a thermal switch nearby
  • Check the ambient temp in that compartment during a run — you might be surprised

Also worth grabbing the data from VictronConnect via Bluetooth afterwards — it logs temperature history and you can see exactly when it was throttling. Saved me a lot of guesswork. What's your current mounting situation?

Had almost the same saga on my boat last year — Orion tucked into a locker with approximately zero airflow, wondering why it was having a paddy every couple of hours on a long coastal run.

Turned out I'd basically built it a little sauna. Moved it to a spot with actual ventilation and the problem vanished completely.

The thing Victron don't shout loudly enough in the manual is that these units really mean it about mounting orientation and clearance. Not just "nice to have" — it's doing proper thermal management back there.

@CarlYoung is right about the throttling pattern. Worth checking with the VictronConnect app too — you can pull the history and actually see the temperature curve climbing before each dropout. Makes diagnosing it dead simple rather than guessing in the dark.

@InverterQueen — @CarlYoung and @Kingy have covered the thermal angle well, so I'll add one thing people miss: check your input voltage under load. On a long motorway run the alternator output can sag depending on your vehicle's charging profile, and if the Orion's input drops below its minimum threshold (9.5V on 12V models) it'll cut out in a way that looks thermal but isn't.

Worth logging with a Victron SmartShunt or even a cheap USB voltage logger on the starter battery side while driving. I've seen this exact pattern on my narrowboat's engine circuit — looked like overheating, turned out to be a dodgy connection causing voltage drop under sustained load.

Also double-check your input cable gauge. 30A sustained over 90 minutes through undersized cable generates surprising resistance heat.

Worth checking your input voltage too — if the alternator's putting out slightly low voltage on a hot engine after a long run, the Orion can struggle and drop out even before thermals become the main culprit. Had this on the narrowboat; turned out my alternator was borderline and the combination of heat + marginal voltage was causing fits.

Victron Connect will show you the history — check whether it's logging low input voltage warnings alongside any temperature faults. Tells you immediately which problem you're actually solving.

If it is thermal, @Kingy's right about airflow, but even just angling the unit so the fins aren't facing a dead wall makes a surprising difference.
