Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long drives — temperature issue?

Had the exact same thing with mine last summer. Turns out the unit was mounted too close to the engine bay bulkhead and just couldn't shed heat fast enough on longer runs.

Few things worth checking:

  • Airflow around the unit — Victron recommend at least 10cm clearance on all sides but honestly more is better
  • Input voltage under load — if your alternator voltage is dipping, the Orion can get confused and cycle off/on
  • Firmware — grab the latest via VictronConnect, there were some thermal management tweaks in recent updates

I remounted mine in a spot with better airflow and added a small 12v fan blowing across it (wired to a temperature switch from Amazon, about £8). Hasn't cut out once since, even on a 4-hour motorway run up to Scotland.

Worth also checking whether you've got the engine-running detection configured properly in VictronConnect. If it's set too sensitive it can interpret a voltage wobble as the engine stopping and shut the charge cycle down prematurely — nothing to do with heat but causes identical symptoms.

What's your install location? And are you seeing any error codes in the app when it trips out, or does it just silently stop?

@LutonNomad had the same nonsense with mine in the van — turns out Victron's "ambient temperature up to 40°C" rating is optimistic when you've bolted it to a metal shelf six inches from a hot exhaust tunnel.

Few things people miss:

  • Airflow direction matters — mount it so natural convection actually helps, fins vertical
  • Check your input voltage under load; if the alternator's struggling, the Orion will derate or shut down entirely
  • The VictronConnect app shows thermal history if you dig into the data — genuinely useful rather than just guessing
  • Some folks add a small 12V fan triggered off the same circuit — bodge, but it works

Mine's been solid since I remounted it on an aluminium bracket away from anything warm. Took twenty minutes and cost me nothing except my dignity crawling about under a shelf.

Has anyone actually measured the surface temp of the unit when it cuts out? I've got a non-isolated Orion 30A in my motorhome and I've been using a cheap IR thermometer to log temps periodically on longer runs.

What I've noticed is that the aluminium fins seem to do very little if airflow is stagnant — even at ambient temps well below 40°C. Makes me wonder whether active cooling (small 12V fan triggered off the ignition) would be worth experimenting with.

Also worth checking: is the input voltage sagging? My alternator drops noticeably at low RPM in traffic, and I've read that the Orion can behave oddly when input approaches minimum threshold. Could be masking what looks like a thermal shutdown but is actually a voltage issue.

Anyone used the Victron Connect app to pull the fault history and confirm it's definitely thermal protection triggering?

@WattKaren a £12 IR thermometer from Amazon will tell you more about your Orion's health than Victron's entire support team ever will — mine hits 68°C bolted to a wooden panel like an absolute muppet (my fault, not Victron's).

@WattKaren absolutely get that IR thermometer on it — but also check the VE.Direct data if you've got a USB cable handy. The Orion logs its internal temp and you can pull thermal cutout events in VictronConnect history. Much more precise than surface readings.

One thing nobody's mentioned: airflow direction matters enormously. The Orion wants to exhaust heat lengthways along the fins, so if you've mounted it with fins running vertically in a sealed compartment, you're essentially building a little Dutch oven around a £200 bit of kit.

My cabin setup runs two Orion-Trs in parallel and I deliberately left 80mm clearance each side plus a small 12V fan triggered by a temperature relay. Zero cutouts even on a 4-hour motorway slog whilst simultaneously charging via solar — the fan draws virtually nothing and keeps both units comfortably below threshold.

@WattKaren when mine was doing something similar last winter, I actually caught it mid-cutout and the fins were almost too hot to touch briefly — well past the point where the thermal protection kicks in around 40°C ambient according to Victron's docs.

What finally sorted it was repositioning the unit horizontally with the fins vertical so convection could actually do its job. Sounds obvious in hindsight but I'd had it mounted flat against a panel like an idiot.

Also worth checking your cable run lengths — undersized cabling creates resistance, resistance creates heat at the unit itself, and suddenly you've got two heat sources fighting each other. I went up a gauge on the input side and it made a noticeable difference on longer motorway stints when I'm pushing the full 30A into my leisure bank.
