Had this exact issue with my setup last year. Turned out to be thermal cutout — the Orion gets proper toasty when it's working hard for extended periods, especially if it's tucked away somewhere with poor airflow.
Few things worth checking:
- Mounting position — vertical orientation with the fins running vertically makes a big difference for convection
- Input voltage drop — if your alternator voltage is sagging under load, the Orion works harder to compensate and runs hotter
- Ambient temp — mine was mounted near the engine bay bulkhead and was basically cooking itself
I moved mine to a spot with better airflow and the cutouts stopped almost immediately. Didn't need to mess with settings or anything.
Also worth checking your wiring gauge — undersized cable creates resistance, generates heat at the unit, and can cause voltage drop that triggers the protection circuitry. Victron's own docs are pretty specific about cable sizing for the 30A model.
Some people fit a small 12v fan to force airflow over the unit on long runs — bit of a bodge but apparently works well.
What's your mounting situation like? And are you running it in non-isolated or isolated mode? There are apparently some quirks depending on which you're using, though I've only run non-isolated myself for the cabin setup.
Would be curious whether others have seen this — feels like it's more common than Victron let on when they designed the thing.
