Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long motorway runs — anyone else had this?

Had this exact issue with my setup last year. Turned out to be thermal cutout — the Orion gets proper toasty when it's working hard for extended periods, especially if it's tucked away somewhere with poor airflow.

Few things worth checking:

  • Mounting position — vertical orientation with the fins running vertically makes a big difference for convection
  • Input voltage drop — if your alternator voltage is sagging under load, the Orion works harder to compensate and runs hotter
  • Ambient temp — mine was mounted near the engine bay bulkhead and was basically cooking itself

I moved mine to a spot with better airflow and the cutouts stopped almost immediately. Didn't need to mess with settings or anything.

Also worth checking your wiring gauge — undersized cable creates resistance, generates heat at the unit, and can cause voltage drop that triggers the protection circuitry. Victron's own docs are pretty specific about cable sizing for the 30A model.

Some people fit a small 12v fan to force airflow over the unit on long runs — bit of a bodge but apparently works well.

What's your mounting situation like? And are you running it in non-isolated or isolated mode? There are apparently some quirks depending on which you're using, though I've only run non-isolated myself for the cabin setup.

Would be curious whether others have seen this — feels like it's more common than Victron let on when they designed the thing.

@GlenWard yeah thermal's almost certainly your culprit. Mine was doing the same thing on the A1 until I moved it out from behind the cab lining where it had zero airflow.

Victron recommend at least 10cm clearance on all sides but honestly the more the better. I bolted mine to an aluminium bracket on the bulkhead now — acts as a bit of a heatsink too.

Worth checking the actual temps with the VictronConnect app if you haven't already — you can see if it's hitting the thermal threshold. Also make sure the firmware's current, there was a batch a while back with dodgy thermal management apparently.

@GlenWard @OllieThompson73 — thermal's a classic one, but before you assume that's the whole story, worth checking your alternator voltage too.

On longer runs at cruising speed some alternators push 14.8V or higher, and if the Orion's input ceiling is being tickled it'll cut out as a protective measure rather than a thermal event. Caught me out on my boat's engine bay — spent ages repositioning the unit before I realised the beta alternator was spiking badly under load.

Grab a multimeter and log the voltage at the Orion input whilst someone else drives. Simple test, five minutes, could save you a lot of head-scratching.

If it is thermal, the Victron Connect app will show the cutout temperature in the history — that'll confirm it definitively rather than guessing.

Great shout from @Del there — definitely worth ruling out the voltage side before you go pulling it apart to reposition it. One thing I'd add that nobody's mentioned yet: check your input cable run length and gauge. If you've got an undersized cable or a longer run than ideal, you'll get enough voltage drop under load that the Orion starts seeing marginal input voltage, which can cause it to drop out intermittently — and it'll often coincide with those longer motorway stints when the charger's been working flat out. Stick a multimeter on the input terminals while it's running and see what you're actually getting versus what's at the alternator. You might be surprised. It's a dead easy fix if that's the culprit — just upsize the cable or add a shorter direct run from the battery.

Really useful thread — been lurking on this exact issue as I've got an Orion 30A on my boat and it's been dropping out on longer runs too.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: have you checked whether the unit is going into "engine detection" mode and cutting out prematurely? On boats (and possibly vans?) the alternator voltage profile can be a bit erratic depending on engine load, and the Orion can misread it as the engine shutting off.

Worth diving into VictronConnect and checking the history tab — it'll show you whether it's logging thermal shutdowns specifically or something else entirely. Saves a lot of guesswork before you start repositioning the unit.

What firmware version are you running? There were some improvements to the engine detection algorithm in later versions if I remember correctly.
