Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long motorway runs — anyone else?

Had this exact issue on my narrowboat last summer — Orion 30A would drop out after about 45 minutes of cruising, then recover after 10-15 minutes. Drove me absolutely mad.

Turned out to be thermal throttling. The unit was mounted in a fairly enclosed panel cupboard with almost no airflow, and on warm days it was just cooking itself. Moved it to a more exposed position with a small 12v fan pulling air across it and the problem vanished completely.

A few things worth checking:

  • Input voltage — if your alternator output drops slightly under load, the Orion can get twitchy about its lower threshold. Worth logging it with a Victron Cerbo or even just a cheap Bluetooth shunt to see what's actually happening
  • Mounting orientation — Victron recommend specific orientations for thermal management, easy to overlook
  • Firmware — there was a batch a while back with some instability issues, updating via VictronConnect sorted it for a few people on here

What's your input cable run like? Long thin cables from the starter battery can cause enough voltage drop to confuse the unit, especially once everything heats up on a motorway run. Worth measuring voltage at the unit itself rather than at the battery.

Is yours the isolated or non-isolated version? The behaviour can differ slightly between them.

Anyone else had persistent cut-outs that weren't thermal? Curious whether there's another pattern I'm not aware of.

Did Victron's remote console show any fault codes when it dropped out?

Also worth double-checking your cable sizing on the input side. Undersized cables create resistance, which means voltage drop under load, and the Orion can get a bit unhappy if it's not seeing enough input voltage consistently. Run some proper 6mm² or better depending on your run length.

@MultiPlus_Queen — what ended up being your fix in the end? Was it purely thermal or something else going on? Always useful to know the root cause for others searching this later.

@MultiPlus_Queen what was your input voltage looking like when it cut out? On my static van setup I noticed the Orion gets stroppy if the alternator voltage dips below threshold — some smart alternators with variable voltage regulation will drop output at motorway speeds depending on battery state.

Worth logging with a Victron Smart Shunt or even a cheap Bluetooth monitor before assuming it's purely thermal. Could be the unit hitting undervoltage protection rather than temp.

Also — is yours the isolated or non-isolated version? The isolated Tr runs noticeably warmer in my experience.

Grabbed a cheap Bluetooth voltage monitor on the starter battery side and the readings were eye-opening — alternator was showing 14.2V at idle but dropping to 12.8V at cruise once everything was warm.

Also worth double-checking your input cable sizing. I was running mine on undersized wire for the run length and the voltage drop was making it worse. Upped to 16mm² and it made a noticeable difference.

@RelayDream is right to focus on that input voltage — it's often the culprit before you even start suspecting the Orion itself.
