Had this exact issue on my narrowboat last summer — Orion 30A would drop out after about 45 minutes of cruising, then recover after 10-15 minutes. Drove me absolutely mad.
Turned out to be thermal throttling. The unit was mounted in a fairly enclosed panel cupboard with almost no airflow, and on warm days it was just cooking itself. Moved it to a more exposed position with a small 12v fan pulling air across it and the problem vanished completely.
A few things worth checking:
- Input voltage — if your alternator output drops slightly under load, the Orion can get twitchy about its lower threshold. Worth logging it with a Victron Cerbo or even just a cheap Bluetooth shunt to see what's actually happening
- Mounting orientation — Victron recommend specific orientations for thermal management, easy to overlook
- Firmware — there was a batch a while back with some instability issues, updating via VictronConnect sorted it for a few people on here
What's your input cable run like? Long thin cables from the starter battery can cause enough voltage drop to confuse the unit, especially once everything heats up on a motorway run. Worth measuring voltage at the unit itself rather than at the battery.
Is yours the isolated or non-isolated version? The behaviour can differ slightly between them.
Anyone else had persistent cut-outs that weren't thermal? Curious whether there's another pattern I'm not aware of.
