Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long motorway runs — anyone else?

Had the exact same grief on my narrowboat when I was running a similar setup for the engine alternator to lithium bank. Nine times out of ten when these cut out on sustained runs it's thermal throttling — the Orion smart units are quite sensitive to airflow and if they're tucked in a cupboard or bilge space with no ventilation they'll protect themselves by shutting down.

Few things worth checking:

  • Ambient temp around the unit — Victron's own spec sheet lists derating starting around 40°C. Motorway runs with engine bay heat soaking in is a classic scenario
  • Input voltage sag — if your alternator is struggling and voltage dips below threshold the Orion will cut out. Worth logging with a Victron BMV or even a cheap inline logger to catch it in real time
  • Firmware — sounds obvious but I've seen older firmware versions behave oddly on sustained high-load charging cycles

On my boat I ended up mounting mine vertically with a small 12v fan pulling air across it, fed off the same ignition-switched circuit. Cut the thermal issues completely. Van conversion folk I've spoken to on here swear by the same approach.

What's your mounting orientation and is it in an enclosed space? Also worth checking whether it's the isolated or non-isolated variant — the isolated ones do run a bit warmer in my experience.

Also, are you seeing it in the VictronConnect app as an actual fault code or just silently dropping out? That'll tell you a lot about whether it's thermal, under-voltage, or something else entirely. Would be good to get a few more data points from others on here who've had this.

@ExSquaddie49 makes a solid point about thermals — worth adding that mounting position is often the culprit rather than the unit itself being faulty. I've seen these Orions tucked into totally unventilated compartments behind dashboards where heat just bakes them alive on a long motorway stretch.

Check your mounting surface too — bolting directly to timber instead of a metal heatsink makes a surprising difference. Aluminium plate between the Orion and whatever it's sitting on costs pennies and can drop operating temps considerably.

Also worth logging the input voltage during a run if you can. Some alternators sag under sustained load and if you're dipping below the Orion's input threshold it'll drop out and look exactly like a thermal issue when it isn't.

Had this exact issue in my motorhome last summer. Turned out the alternator was dropping voltage under load — Orion kept seeing it as a fault condition rather than thermals.

Worth checking with a multimeter what voltage is actually arriving at the Orion input during a long run, not just at idle. Mine was sagging to 12.8v on a heavy pull and the unit was just giving up.

Also check your input cable sizing. Undersized wire = voltage drop = unit cuts out. Ran 10mm² and still had issues until I shortened the run.

The Victron Connect app will show you the fault history — check that first before assuming it's temperature related like @ExSquaddie49 suggests.

Check your cable runs aren't doing a scenic tour of the engine bay. Mine on the narrowboat looked like it had been

Worth checking your input voltage threshold settings in VictronConnect before assuming it's thermal. The Orion-Tr Smart has a default input lockout voltage that can cause it to shut down if your alternator voltage dips under load — common on older vehicles with marginal charging systems or long cable runs creating volt drop.

Ran into this on my static caravan setup using a donor vehicle as a charge source. Bumped the low-voltage disconnect down a touch and the dropouts stopped immediately.

Also — check your cable sizing. A 30A unit needs properly rated cable both sides, not just the output. Undersized input wiring creates resistance, drops voltage at the unit, triggers the lockout. Seen people run 6mm² where 10mm² is needed and wonder why it misbehaves.

@DownsCruiser's alternator voltage point ties directly into this.

Quick one — has anyone actually checked whether the Orion's input voltage lockout is set correctly for your alternator type? I've got a smart alternator on my van-to-garden-office setup and the voltage swings all over the shop under load, which the Orion absolutely hates.

@FormerMechanic14 mentions VictronConnect settings, which is spot on — but specifically, are you running the isolated or non-isolated variant? I made the schoolboy error of assuming isolated was always "safer" and then spent a weekend wondering why mine kept stropping.

Also worth asking: what's your ambient temp in the engine bay? Mine was mounted too close to the exhaust manifold (don't ask) and thermal shutdown was masquerading as an input voltage issue. Stuck a cheap thermal probe on it and the penny dropped immediately.
