Had almost the exact same saga last summer driving down to the south of France. Three hours into a motorway stint and the Orion would just quietly give up — no alarm, no drama, just stopped pushing amps into the leisure bank.
Took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out what was happening. Turned out my cable run from the alternator circuit was slightly undersized for the sustained load, and over a long run the voltage drop was enough to trigger the input undervoltage cutoff. The Orion's doing exactly what it's designed to do — it's just a bit unforgiving.
A few things worth checking:
- Cable gauge and length — the 30A model really wants proper 10mm² cabling, not the 6mm² that a lot of installers default to
- Alternator health — modern smart alternators with variable voltage output can confuse it. Worth logging input voltage via the VE.Direct port if you've got a Cerbo or even just a USB adapter
- Ventilation — mine was tucked behind a panel with basically no airflow. Thermal shutdown on a hot engine bay run is more common than people admit
After re-running with 10mm² and giving the unit a bit more breathing room, it's been rock solid — including a recent run up to the Scottish Highlands without a hiccup.
