Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long motorway runs — heat issue?

Mine did exactly the same on a six-hour run to Scotland — turns out I'd mounted it vertically with the fins horizontal, which is apparently about as useful for airflow as a chocolate teapot.

Flip it so the fins run vertically and give it a proper 100mm clearance all round — night and day difference on my narrowboat setup.

A few other things worth checking:

  • Input voltage drop — if your starter battery is sitting low under load, the Orion will throttle back or shut off. Stick a multimeter on it while the engine's running and see what you've actually got
  • Ambient temp in the compartment — these things derate aggressively above 40°C, and a sealed engine bay on a motorway in August might as well be a fan oven
  • Firmware — Victron Connect, check it, update it, thank me later

The 30A unit will thermal-protect itself rather than die, so it's not necessarily catastrophic — it's just deeply annoying when you're trying to top up your Fogstar lithiums before you hit the campsite.

Anyone else found a decent forced-air solution for cramped installations? Wondering if a small 12V fan triggered off a temperature switch is worth the faff or whether I should just resign myself to stopping at every services for a "comfort break" while the Orion has a sit-down.

@BoatMark good spot on the orientation — that catches a surprising number of people out.

Worth also checking your input voltage under load. The Orion-Tr Smart will throttle back aggressively if the alternator voltage droops below ~13.2V on a long run, especially with older vehicles or undersized cabling. Thermal shutdown and undervoltage protection can present almost identically in the logs.

Pull the VictronConnect history after a cutout — it'll show you exactly which protection triggered. If it's genuinely thermal, also consider whether you've got adequate clearance around the unit; Victron recommend 10cm minimum on the fin side.

Mine's mounted horizontally with fins vertical on a plate bolted to the van wall, running continuous 30A without complaint across multiple Scotland trips. Cable sizing matters too — I'm running 10mm² throughout on a short run.

@BoatMark classic Victron moment — the unit's basically thermally throttling itself into a sulk while you're blissfully doing 70mph thinking everything's grand.

Once you've sorted the fin orientation, also worth checking there's actually space around it. I've seen people mount these things in a cubby hole tighter than a Tesco

@BoatMark mine lives in the shepherd's hut nose-end cabinet and I shoved a tiny 12V fan behind it — sorted, like giving it its own personal breeze on a hot day at a village fête. 🌀

@BoatMark worth adding — ambient temperature inside that enclosure matters enormously, even with fins oriented correctly. I did thermal logging on mine using a cheap DS18B20 sensor and found the cabinet air was sitting 18–22°C above ambient on a warm day, which pushes the Orion's internal temp into throttling territory before it's even working hard.

If you've got any flexibility, duct a small vent to outside air — even a passive louvred inlet low down and an outlet high up creates enough convection to make a meaningful difference. The Victron VictronConnect app will show you the unit's actual operating temperature in real time, so you can diagnose whether it's a sustained heat-soak problem versus brief spikes. Sustained means airflow/location; brief spikes usually point to input voltage sag instead, which is a completely separate rabbit hole worth ruling out first.

@BoatMark been down this exact rabbit hole with my Orion-Tr Smart 30A.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet — wire gauge matters more than people realise. Undersized input cables create resistance, which means voltage drop, which means the unit works harder to compensate, which means more heat. Classic vicious circle.

Also worth checking your input voltage under load. If your alternator's struggling and the Orion's seeing anything below around 13V on the input side, it'll push harder and run hotter.

@ExPostie82 is right about ambient — I actually drilled a couple of 25mm ventilation holes in my cabinet after logging temps with a cheap sensor. Made a noticeable difference before I even touched the fan question @BatteryPaula raised.

Victron Connect will show you the thermal throttling events in the history tab if you want hard evidence rather than guesswork.
