Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out on long motorway runs — heat issue?

Had almost exactly this with mine last summer — was doing a run up to Scotland and noticed the leisure battery just wasn't climbing the way it should. Pulled over at a services and the Orion was absolutely roasting.

Turned out the mounting position was the culprit. Mine was tucked behind a panel with virtually no airflow around it, which is fine for short hops but sustained motorway speeds mean the alternator is pumping hard for hours and the Orion just can't shed the heat fast enough. It'll throttle back or cut entirely to protect itself — which is exactly what it's designed to do, but not much comfort when you're trying to keep a fridge running.

A few things that helped me:

  • Relocated it to a spot with decent airflow — even just 50mm clearance made a difference
  • Mounted it to a metal surface rather than plastic so it could conduct heat away properly
  • Checked the wiring gauge — undersized cable creates resistance and generates extra heat before it even reaches the unit

Worth also checking whether you've got the non-isolated or isolated version — the isolated variant runs a touch warmer in my experience.

Have a look in the Victron Connect app if you're using it; the history tab will show whether it's logging over-temperature warnings. That confirmed it for me pretty quickly.

Anyone else had luck with adding a small 12V fan blowing across it? I've seen people do that in van builds but never tried it myself — curious whether it's overkill or actually worth doing.

@Nige1977 classic thermal throttling — the Orion 30A is notorious for this when it's tucked somewhere with no airflow. Mine used to do exactly the same on long runs across Dorset into Somerset, temperature climbing and output dropping right off.

Sorted it by mounting mine vertically on an external panel with at least 50mm clearance all round. Night and day difference. Some folk swear by adding a small 12V fan triggered by a temperature switch, which costs pennies compared to the frustration.

Worth also checking whether your alternator is actually holding voltage under load — if it's dipping below 13.2V the Orion can get confused and cut back. Victron's VictronConnect app will show you the input voltage history if you've got the Bluetooth dongle on yours.

Sounds like you've already diagnosed it perfectly tbh. @DorsetDweller is spot on about airflow.

Mine lives under the passenger seat in my van — had the same issue until I added a small 12v fan that kicks in with the ignition. Night and day difference on long runs.

Few things worth checking:

  • Mounting orientation — vertical is best for heat dissipation
  • VE.Connect app — pull the data logs, you'll see exactly when it throttled back
  • Temperature compensation wiring sorted?

Victron's own guidance suggests ambient shouldn't exceed around 40°C near the unit. Motorhome engine bays and seat boxes get way hotter than that in summer.

Mine lives in the garden office van conversion and I bolted it to an external aluminium bracket — basically turned the whole van wall into a heatsink and the throttling vanished overnight. 🧊

@DorsetDweller is right about the airflow, but honestly mounting surface matters just as much — a thin steel panel conducts heat nowhere near as well as a chunky ali extrusion. Victron's own docs quietly mention this if you squint hard enough at the installation guide.

Worth checking the Victron Connect app logs too — it'll show you exactly when it throttled and by how much, which is chef's kiss for proving to yourself you're not imagining it.

@Nige1977 worth checking the VRM logs if you've got a GX device connected — you can pull the temperature data retrospectively and see exactly when throttling kicked in. The Orion-TR Smart logs output current, so a sudden stepdown mid-motorway will show clearly.

One thing nobody's mentioned: input voltage sag can compound the thermal issue badly. At high alternator load, if your cable run is marginal — undersized or poor crimps — voltage drop causes the Orion to pull higher current to compensate, generating more heat, throttling sooner. Classic vicious cycle.

Measure voltage at the Orion input terminals while running, not at the battery. I found a 0.4V discrepancy on my own setup that was pushing the unit harder than necessary. Sorted the cable joints and thermal behaviour improved noticeably even before I addressed airflow.

@VoltBarry has the right idea but mounting location matters too — I've got mine tucked in the engine bay adjacent bulkhead on the narrowboat and it's never throttled once, because there's actually airflow moving through there rather than stagnant van-conversion dead air.

30A sounds generous until thermals start derate-ing it down to something embarrassing like 12A and your 200Ah Fogstar lithium just sits there laughing at you.

Check your input voltage drop as well — if your alternator's struggling and voltage is sagging, the Orion works harder, generates more heat, throttles, generates more heat. Classic death spiral that people blame on the unit when it's actually a dodgy connection on the starter battery terminal.
